Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

voters probably have their leafs hate goggles on that's true.

but again, voters almost never vote for a cup loser unless the stats are otherworldy.

but if he can't win anything on the ice the leafs haters will definitely vote him a consolation prize.

It took McDavid scoring 42 points in 25 games in 2024 to become only the second non-goalie ever to win the Conn Smythe in a losing effort. On the one hand, Mitch isn't quite at that level. On the other hand, Carolina doesn't have a goalie to offer up as a serious candidate, and their offensive production has been such a by-a-committee effort that it's tough to single out any one of them for the Conn Smythe.

Hopefully Staal can keep scoring at least a goal every game on the way to Carolina winning. That, plus him being a sympathetic gudpro "plays the right way" veteran leaderbean would hopefully be enough to capture the voters. Especially if combined with Mitch pulling his games 5-7 disappearing act.

Mitch will get a lot of votes just based on the Leaf hate bias. I agree it would be hilarious if he won it without the Cup. The dry hair “wake the fuck up” memes would be gold.

Need Staal to get 6-9 goals over the next 2/3 games.
If Staal is a party to winning 2/3 games he's the exact kind o winner that will get votes, and based on his final, sure why not?

Isn’t most of Marners points in two games?

He's had 2 4-point games, 2 3-point games, 4 2-point games, 7 1-point games, and 5 times no points.
If Vegas wins doesn't Howden deserve it as much or more than Marner? Bottom 6 guy with 16 goals in the playoffs.

That's not what the narrative will be, given the gap in points between them.

Especially since Carolina is pretty spread around with no obvious best player, Marner could win the Conn Smythe even if Car wins it. But Carolina I think has 5 or 6 guys, that if any of them continue with a good next couple games, should be enough to overcome the gap. Hall, Stankoven, Ehlers, Staal, etc.. if any of them have a big last couple games, gets a few points in whatever clincher game, probably enough to take it.

I mostly think that the Conn Smythe should never go to a player on the losing team. I know it's tough to differentiate between "most valuable player" and "player who had the best stats in the playoffs." But can you really be the MVP on the losing team when the most valuable thing is the Stanley Cup?

Marner, without a doubt has been the best player in the playoffs to this point... and 100% deserves the "best player award" but if Carolina wins, all of those Canes may not put up big points, but they're ridiculously committed to playing both sides of the puck. Their value isn't all in their point totals.
