Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

I think this was more about wanting Byram, than trying to move the pick. They obviously want to stop rebuilding and start winning, and Byram is 25 years old. They'll give him all the minutes and probably PP1. He'll certainly be better the next 2-3 years than anybody they would have drafted.

That still doesn't justify the price. Upside is great but one year of Byram before having to pay him big bucks just isn't worth this much at current market value.
I don't have a problem with the strategy. It's the target that's the problem. Hell, even if Byram was signed to a beauty contract already. Like 3-5-6 years x $6 or even 7m or something... but now they have to throw a bunch of money at a guy that might just be a good 2nd pairing guy.

The problem with hockey vs basketball is that the benefit of analytics and forward thinking are less obvious because you can have berube's fluke out a cup. Or the leafs being a first place team for the first time under Brad and Craig. Or bergevin leading the habs to the cup finals. So it tends to take a little longer than the NBA. Idk anything about football so I can't comment on that.

But we've had data driven teams at the top of the league for nearly a decade now. And a team like the leafs fell off as soon as they move away from that. And the habs turning things around rapidly as soon as they move toward it. So it's becoming more obvious now and I agree with ch1 that it's gonna eventually be a complete wipe out of the old guard.

Nerds run the NFL. There’s too much money at stake. And roster construction is complex A few teams have been lagging, I’m not sure there’s any dodos left

But the have nots will not be as extremely bad. The non analytic Tre GMs will eventually go extinct — it’s just taking longer in the NHL because it’s only a semi serious league
It's a league of billionaire owners with playthings that entertain us, where the money side of it is secondary. It is terrain that will always be occupied by nepo babies, egomaniacs, and other unqualified dummies who get positions due to relationships or favors rather than merit.

There will always be plenty of stupid people running things.

And even if everyone suddenly somehow becomes smart one day, there will still be some smarter ones who will make the others look stupid.
