2019 Carolina Hurricanes Off Season Thread

I finished round 1 of my STM ticket and voucher exchanges. The increase in STM sales is very noticeable when you start to look at what tickets are available now. It looks like a lot of partial plans were sold. The home opener ticket availability was extremely sparse already, even prior to general public sales. I had to get my 2 extras for the opener in another section (and another price point even) for the first time since I re-entered as a STM 2 seasons ago. Partial plans have significantly picked at the premium priced games. That was the case last year too, but I'm seeing it a new level for this coming season.

That is all good of course in the grand scheme of things. Its not so great when you were used to being able to snag the 2 seats next to your STM tickets for most games, but I would rather have the building full and have to break up my family when all 4 of us go than to be able to sit together.
If you are a STM and need extras for any game, especially premium games or are planning on exchanging some tickets around, you might not want to wait too long. Different looking dynamic on the available tickets for this season already.
Wow ... it's been a while since STHers had to worry about such things. For pretty much five solid seasons we've been able to just snag extras a couple of days before any given home game and generally find something near our regular seats. Nice problem to have I guess ... but now I have to hope some a-hole didn't snag those two seats next to me on a full time basis. If I get the mouth-breather that sat there during the playoffs, I'm gonna have to move.

Great rollout video. Meh jersey.
I never have been a fan of the white jersey in anything over the years, just in general the whites in most NHL teams jersey designs are just not that great. The solid color road jersey and third jersey look always seems like a better looking jersey over any whites that are out there.

Upon further reflection, my favorite part of the new road uniform is the 3D logo sticker on the helmet. That's pretty nice. And also, I've always liked how Adidas adds little details, even in places nobody really sees. That warning flag detailing on the inside of the collar is an example. They do that stuff a lot with soccer jerseys and I like it.

I'm indifferent to the new sweater-- adequate but not enticing. I do hate how the bottom portion extending from the band of warning flags looks like a peplum-- doesn't lay flat and looks poorly made. I like the incorporation of the warning flags on the C for Canes and the captain's C. The alternative logo is on the shoulders-- just a matter of time before that red home uni is redone or that becomes the alternate jersey and the black one is the new home jersey. I like the raised decal on the helmet.

If I had to guess, and largely because of the owner's obvious fondness for the current alternate sweater, I'd say the Canes will be re-working the red uniform next and that the black uniform will become the regular home attire. And I'm not so sure they stick with red when they roll that into an alternate ... who knows?

BTW ... the lack of Williams news when half the fanbase seemed to be assuming that a Williams announcement would be coming along with the jersey reveal is ... interesting. And worth talking about, I guess.

I don't think there's any hard and fast deadline for Williams to make up his mind, per se. But practically you have to think he's got to have adequate time to get himself into shape for camp if he does decide he's coming back. Traditionally, we see players who have summered in Raleigh start to show up at the training rink around the end of August or beginning of September to get in a couple of weeks of on ice work in before camp opens. That's soon upon us, and I think people were naturally assuming that we'd hear something by now. I don't want to react too hard, but the longer this drags out the more I'm assuming that Willie is retiring. I think the team has set the roster up to deal with that, should it happen ... and wisely so.

Put me now firmly in the camp of Willie is hanging them up. I think the ship has sailed and if he was coming back he would have already announced it by now. I was pretty confident he would be back for another kick at the cat at the start of the summer but I agree JB that this has drawn out far too long now to think he will play.

Agreed. I don't think he's coming back and I don't blame him one bit. It would be very hard to top last season. On the other hand, there just isn't anyone and I mean anyone who has his leadership abilities. So, maybe one more year as Captain and then pass the torch to Jacob.

Honestly, I don't think you bring back ANY player who hasn't physically prepared for a season just to be your Captain. If he can play and is ready to play, then fine. Otherwise ... nah.

i feel just the opposite. The chance to slide into a more manageable workload due to the roster depth should entice JWill to take one more shot with us. It's an ideal scenario for him.

Sure ... nothing wrong with that.

I'm more objecting to the idea of bringing in a guy SPECIFICALLY because he gives you leadership. Either bring something on the ice or forget it ... even if what you bring is 10 minutes a night with half of it on the power play.

Considering they're almost certainly going to have to shift some salary somewhere to fit him under the cap, yeah. That egg timer in the kitchen is buzzing, Willie.

If Williams does not announce his retirement, then I would expect him to be in pre-camp skates as the guys trickle into town.

On Williams ... Sara Civian of the Athletic indicates that she thinks he WANTS to play, but the issue is more whether or not he feels like he can get his body ready to play a full season. I would suggest ... as an even older guy ... that the longer you wait to get to heavy training to make that happen, the harder it is to get to the point of being ready.

On the prospect tournament roster ... I'd speculate that the high number of invitees reflects the number of European players we've drafted over the last couple of years. There's only one Europe-based player on that roster ... Luostarinen ... and you have to make numbers somehow. May as well scout some "maybes" up close and personal. And yeah ... I know Sellgren is a Euro and may end up back there, but for the purposes of this discussion his current default team is the Checkers and Kuokkanen is a default Checker as well. Either way, that's 3 out of 22.

Out of this lot, look for Priskie, Suzuki, Sellgren, Kuokkanen, Henman, Luostarinen, Rees and Helvig to be warming up for Canes training camp. Everybody else is clawing for a chance at that, I'd think. Plus, Charlotte and Greenville both have some roster holes yet to fill, so the older invitees will have that to shoot for as well.

We also don’t know what he’s been doing to get/stay in shape. So not having made a decision doesn’t mean he’s been sitting on the couch watching the Brady Bunch eating HoHos and drinking milk. Knowing him I’m guessing he’s doing his planned offseason conditioning regardless of the decision.

I think if he decides to play he’ll show up ready for camp.
