2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

RIP Irv Cross. Us older ladies n gentlemen would remember him being a part of that truly innovative CBS NFL pre-game show with him, Phyllis George, Brent Musberger, and Jimmy the Greek.
 
Phoenix has a domed stadium but it's not soccer specific. They really need a dome which drives their cost way up for a new stadium.

Detroit Red Wings, Pistons, Tigers and Lions are all bad. if they get MLS it can't be worse than those 4.

Phyllis George died last year . Pamela Brown her daughter is on CNN

Then build it to expand. The issue is not the city itself, the issue is that MLS has the region covered already .... Charlotte slots nicely between DC and Atlanta and rounds out the Southeast for MLS. They want more presence out West, which also provides growth markets that produce more National Team players than anywhere else in the country. Get rid of the Raleigh colored glasses and this is pretty obvious stuff. Charlotte won. Which is perfectly fine.
 
and Jimmy the Greek lived in Durham for a while. He was on ABC 11 sports during FB season.

I think MLS in Raleigh is about 10% chance at most. So I am realistic.
 
The Snoopy’s on Hillsborough near Glenwood closed for good last night. The land was sold to developers, which is not surprising. That intersection and down to Morgan has seen a lot of new construction the last few years. All other Snoopy’s remain open.

Tell me about it! My office is on Morgan and I drive past it daily to my house on New Bern. Now the land across the street at Goodnight's is to be re-developed. So f'ing look forward to all that traffic.
 
There was a kinda short lived bar next door to that Snoopy's named Divebar. Because of it rather tony location, I thought it was just just a bunch yuppie assholes pretending to wallow in a Bukowskiesque barfly joint, but in reality served up only $25 cocktails. You the kind of place that I refer to. However, it was actually kinda divey and I saw some great metal bands there. RIP to all the places that made Raleigh a fun place to live.
 
land inside beltline is getting more valuable all the time so I can't blame them for selling. As Will Rogers said, buy land, God is not making any more of it. Also the snoopys owner died last year so his family is probably selling it .
 
Our .25 acres office site has an assessed tax value over $760k.
Our office manager is a realtor also and says my former little plot on Sasser St. in Oakdale is valued similarly. Bought it and the 850 SF house in 1994 for $61k.

Believe it or not, the location on Glenwood that became the Dive Bar used to be the first delivery-focused sandwich shop in town in the mid-80s. Can't remember the name for the life of me, but they started up right after Dominoes came to town.

And yeah, since they're fixing to drop a North Hills sized development project on the block where Charlie Goodnight's is located, that whole general area will feel good and homogenized within a decade. Hope those yuppies and techies like paying too much for a delightful view of Central Prison. The prison has always kind of lurked as an anchor weighing down the hopes of developers to "upscale" that area before now, but apparently gentrification waits for nothing these days.

As long as Trophy survives. I never realized you could see Central Prison from there, I never paid attention when I was at Goodnight’s or Trophy.

Central is down in a hole, so you need some height ... but it's there. Lurking.
 
Speaking of that particular Trophy, wasn't it the the location of the Hamburger Hut? They had the best burgers in town. And I think it was a legit diner before that, right?

Yes. Ate so many burgers from there that a former partner told me I was going to turn into a hamburger. They had great shakes also.
Place is a 2 minute walk from the office.

I've heard some serious nasty sounds come from Central over the years. As noted, my office is on Morgan, so I've seen it at least 5 out of 7 days over the last 36 years. Also had a shop in Boylan Heights for a couple years that looked over the tracks to the exercise yard.

Trophy beers underwhelm me. Significantly. Kind of French poof, froo froo beer. Their pizza, OTOH...

Over all the years we’ve shared this board together, I have never agreed with a statement from you more.

I LOVE Trophy’s pizza, but have yet to find a beer of there’s that I really like.
