Yeah, I dunno. The Canes Twitter community are a special brand of nitwits. They truly disdain veterans who might have made their bones somewhere else in favor of homegrown players, that's for sure. Andersen is an excellent example. Basically anyone with any sense at all knew that they only question with him was going to be health, yet ask that lot what they thought of the idea of replacing Ned with an actual proven veteran and they all but rioted. Ned sucked on toast last year, but I'm still pretty sure 90% of that band of morons would prefer having him back to having another year of Andersen and Raanta ... who won the freaking Jennings Trophy last year between them. I honestly think Canes Twitter was happier when the Hurricanes were still underdog statistical darlings who didn't win anything. At least then you could point to various obscure stats and make a case that your team was better than people thought ... I guess. That seems to have more allure to them than actually being good. I stopped engaging with any of that lot years ago. Buncha loons.
Oh, and Gold IS a moron. It's amazing to me how little the man has actually absorbed in 25 years of being paid to pay attention to an actual NHL club. I don't think the mob really listens to him though. Not sure anybody really listen to him.

Certainly. The only difference being that I do use Twitter to get info on the Hurricanes so that crowd is all but unavoidable. Facebook is easy enough ... I don't follow any official accounts and NEVER read comments in hockey posts. I just assume they've gotten worse since in the last decade ... because everything else on the internet has.You speak ill of Canes Twitter, but I raise you Canes Facebook groups

But they generally have at least a vague understanding of the sports they discuss. AG has been covering hockey for long enough to have a better grasp. It’s the only local pro team. It’s his freaking job. But he doesn’t. He seems knowledgeable about baseball.

I must admit I miss the golden days of Sports Talk radio call in shows after a big game or win from your local team...usually you are all jacked up from the game and the win and you just want to stay up all night enjoying the moment so you get in line on the phone line and speak your mind! The Leafs use to have a radio call in guy for sports talk out of Toronto named Storming Norman Rumac that use to get everyone up in a lather with his show.

It's his job. It's the only pro sport in town (kind of ... in the year or our Lord 2022, we can stop pretending that college sports are amateur endeavors), and it's a sport he grew up watching. It really should have been fairly simple to have gained a functioning grasp of how things work in the NHL yet this guy might actually have less of a clue now than he did in 1997. He routinely falls in love with and over-values players who will talk to him and who are good on the radio and dismisses those who don't and aren't. He has no functioning understanding of the market economics of the sport or of the salary cap. He spends no time getting familiar with prospects unless they are suitably high profile enough to have other people hype them. And despite all this lack of understanding and preparation ... God forbid anyone ever disagree with the guy.
It's not just a sports radio problem with Gold, although that's a part of it. It's a lazy blowhard problem. Regional/local sports radio has all but killed itself over the last decade, so this kind of thing matters less and less I suppose. It's still discouraging because our local sports station has run off any number of people with a better handle on the only major pro sport in town.
Gotta be honest ... call-in shows lost their appeal for me a long, long time ago. Back when they were maybe one day or night a week, that was fine, but the last thing I need in my life is "Jimmy from Bunn" screeching about how bad "that goalie feller" was after a 2-1 loss or whatever. No offense to Bunn or people named Jimmy. I have family who fit that description and I don't wanna hear it from them either.

There really hasn't been decent sports talk in this area since the Gary Dornburg days at WPTF.
And let's be honest ... that was a couple of nights a week plus post game stuff for just NC State. We're talking 12+ hours a day during the work week plus a smaller period on weekends to fill. It HAD to go down in quality with that much time to fill.
We had Solarte for a while before he got the TV job in Charlotte. But some of the other dreck we‘ve had? Yuck. Morgan Patrick/Patrick Morgan, anyone? How about the Fan turning Saturday mornings over to Gordon Miller, of Miller Lending fame? A guy that Gold used to refer to as “The Hank” when he’d have him as a guest.
WPTF used to cover racing back a million years ago, but only with a kind of weekend roundup show on Sunday nights.
