Meh ... they kind of had to do that to replace this year's Tourney. I was told by a couple of ACC execs that we shouldn't expect many more Greensboro tournaments going forward. They put some pressure on the Greensboro organizing committee to up their game for this year's tourney but they really kind of crapped the bed ... Covid19 aside. Their food and beverage was the same old crap they had last time they hosted and absolutely every other facility in the rotation blows the Coliseum out of the water in every respect other than capacity and parking.

First off, I'm talking about the food in the arena ... in which case, yes. All of those places absolutely have better concessions that Greensboro. It's not even close, in fact. Completely different league.
 
In non-sports diversions, we're about at the end of season 2 of Ozark. We find it completely unbingeable. Two episodes max, then we have to take a break for a day or two, because it's just too intense. Great writing, great acting, great direction, absolutely creepy cinematography and score.

Luke DeCock retweeted an article he wrote in 2018 about bringing the 75th Anniversary tournament to Raleigh. Not just PNC, but playing the 3 Tuesday games at Reynolds (or whatever prelim games there are in 2028). The article was written after the renovations were complete, so Reynolds only has 5,600 capacity now. The ACC lost their chance at making a splash at Madison Square Garden when the Big East extended through 2028. If tickets are distributed equitably to each school, I don’t see a huge problem with playing on a school’s home court. There is no guarantee that State fans will snap up returned extras from other schools, there will be plenty of competition from Duke and UNC and even Wake if they regain relevance before then. Besides, seein Jim Boeheim moan is one of my favorite things.

One of my fondest non-Villanova college basketball memories is the 1979 NCAA tournament and watching the 9 and 10 seeds, Penn and St. John’s, knock off 1 and 2, UNC and Duke on TV. And all the locals booing when the streamers flew after the first basket. Penn went on to win the region (over St. John’s) before getting smoked by Magic and Michigan St. in the national semifinal.

 
Pretty sure 79 was the last year for NCAA games in Reynolds. NCAA noticed that the majority of seats were behind the goals and it was pretty cramped all over and not in the best of shape overall. NCSU did not make the tourney in 79 but they did in 80 a few weeks before Sloan went back to Florida and Valvano arrived. And today is the day in 93 that Valvano died. I read somewhere that Valvano was going to apply at Florida but when Sloan was hired there his wife said why not apply at NCSU? The rest is history.

For those who haven't seen Reynolds since the renovation, it's VERY nice now. They opened up a clerestory at one end to add lighting, there's A/C now, modern restrooms, updated seating and the whole thing is bright, clean and comfortable. I recommend taking in a State women's game sometime ... it rocks pretty hard even when they only draw 3,500 or so, and the tickets are cheap. Plus, Wes Moore has that program back on the map. They're fun to watch.

Are you kidding? That was Black Friday, man ... No 1 seed Carolina lost to Penn and No 2 seed Duke lost to St John's on the same day in the same building ... and it was freaking Reynolds. I was there with my Dad and it was shadenefreude heaven for State fans.
 
I remember 82 now , but that was the last one. They went to the Dean Dome around 87 and Duke played there while UNC was shipped out . Now you can't play on your home court. I think 87 was the only year at UNC. they are going back to PNC next season and UNC will probably be there assuming they are not bad again. .

Sorry guys.... that was 1979. Look it up. Carolina were runners up in 81 and champions in 82. And Penn played Carolina because they beat Iona in the first round, coached by...
 
It was actually March 11th, Black Sunday in 79 when Duke and UNC both lost. UNC lost by 1 , Duke lost by 2. Penn made the final 4 that year by beating St. Johns in Greensboro. I think they may have been the last Ivy to make the final 4. Penn got blown out by Mich. St. with Magic Johnson who beat Indiana St. with Larry Bird for the title. Edit - Penn in 79 was the last Ivy in the final 4.

No. That lovely day, I was still at Millbrook. I was in Peter batchelors studio as a sophomore so it had to be spring 82.
No better place for college bb than Reynolds. Loud, hot, popcorn and cigarette smoke smell and right on top of the court which was completely surrounded by students. Seen lots of dook and hole players call it the worst place they played. Hubert Davis said Cameron students would say things and make you laugh. State students would say things and make you cry. Saw some great ball played there.
Couple years ago I saw a you tube clip of Thurl dunking off Perkins’ sleepy noggin in 83 and swear I can see me in the frame. Along with my dejected g/f!
Lot of newcomers just don’t know the roots of modern bb planted in that barn.

Yup ... 79. I got the events correct and the year wrong. Classic me. Either way, that was a delightful weekend. We had seats on the floor behind one of the benches. Since State wasn't in the Tournament we just hung out at Reynolds and watched games because they were there, but getting the chance to see a really good Carolina team and a really good Duke team lose on the same day was fairly priceless for a State fan.
