Martin Brodeur said exactly that.....there was a bias towards the leagues that played, like Europe. Teams preferred opting for players that have played since last spring

Our approach is bizarre. Stockpile picks last year and make some interesting picks. Great.

This draft, stockpile picks, but don’t bundle to move up. Limit yourself to picking US kids because you can’t offer that many contracts.
Stockpile picks for a weak draft next year- won’t the same problem exist with contracts? Are we going to limit ourselves to picking American kids again?

It's like the Habs were planning to do their scouting in the last 3 months and the season and got caught by surprise and didn't know who to draft so they took a pass at this draft to try again next year.

Seems that way for sure. This was one bizarre and imo shit Montreal draft for such a deep draft. We'll likely look back to 2020 wondering how they screwed it up so badly.
