2022-23 Premier League Thread

Well, he's no idiot so I'm presuming that Marsch will negotiate contract protection if they get relegated. Because that team is a mess, have been managed by two successive idiots and it would take a freaking miracle to breathe life into their season.
And ... looks like Marsch DID insist on a long term deal that protected him if Southampton took the drop, and it cost him the job. Bullet dodged. If they just want a turnaround specialist, they should stick with Big Sam.

The Times says that David Moyes will be sacked if West Ham lose to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. With the weekend’s results, West Ham has dropped to 18th in the table. They’ve won one league match since Halloween, a 2-0 defeat of Everton on January 21, which was Frank Lampard’s last match in charge.

Leeds hired Javi Gracia as their head coach, subject to obtaining a work permit. Since being sacked at Watford, he spent most of a season at Valencia , getting sacked with 4 matches left in the season. He replaced Xavi at Al Sadd in Qatar during the 2021-22 season and won the league but left in June 2022.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, what the hell is the point of VAR if you aren't going to use it to overturn obvious mistakes? I may or may not be watching the replay of the Villa match. They're so afraid of "embarrassing" the ref that it's completely useless. I hate how instant replay is used in basically all sports (replay should have to be used at full speed and with a time limit, no spending five minutes looking frame by frame), but Soccer somehow uses it so much worse that all the other sports combined. VAR didn't even force the ref to look at what was a clear and obvious dive to anyone watching.

I think you're on to something there. While the application and effectiveness of VAR has varied wildly all over the globe, in England it almost seems to be a struggle of manners on top of everything else. In general, I think the EPL needs more former coaches and less former refs in the review booth ... or maybe a combo of the two.

Patrick Vieira was sacked by Crystal Palace. They haven’t won a game this calendar year and have gone 3 straight games without a shot on goal. They’re 12th in the table but only 3 points ahead of 18th Bournemouth.

Vieira just never found a flexible attacking system at Palace. They had one idea, get the ball to Zaha or Ayew out wide and let them use their legs to break people down. That's all well and good, but you need some sort of idea how to play if that isn't working. They have a couple of perfectly competent, big target strikers and I can't remember the last time I saw them whip in a cross. Yet another young manager who just wasn't pragmatic enough, IMO.

Praying that Daniel Levy finds a way to get a Julian Nagelsmann deal across the line. He was a top candidate back when Poch was originally fired, and then their top choice when Mourinho was sacked, but he already had his sights set on Bayern.

If they could avoid getting gazzumped by Real Madrid, and have Nagelsmann at the helm long term, this could be Tottenhams Klopp signing.

Give him carte blanche to implement his project, and get Tottenham back playing exciting football.

Seems from a distance that this part is more the problem than the specific choice of manager.

Yeah this is often the narrative about Levy in the press & on twitter, but in reality he often gets his managers damn near anything they want within reason.

We are a self sustaining club so we cant afford to spend like the oil money clubs, who are ostensibly state run sports washing operations. (most importantly we can’t spend and miss, only to spend again the next window to paper over it….like many of them do.)

Conte likes spinning the idea he wasn’t supported, but we spent like £200m for him buying the likes of Richarlison, Kulusevski, Bentancur, Pedro Porro, Perisic, Lenglet…which doesn’t take into account landing Romero a few months prior to his arrival. (Moves like Udogie, Spence, Bissouma, Pape Sarr….which all looked to be good business at the time, and for the most part still do…where more Paratici/Levy moves for the long term, and gambles on upside…but that’s also how a club with Tottenhams finances should be operating, imo)

Now…Joe Lewis can absolutely be given stick for being a multi billionaire who never invests a dime in the club, but he also does take any of the money we make out…every bit of profit Tottenham make, go back into the club and as a result we now have arguably the best football stadium on the planet, and best training facilities….so the club as a whole has grown enormously, but we still aren’t in the same stratosphere as the Man City’s, Chelsea, PSG, Real Madrid, United*, Barca*, and now unfortunately Newcastles…who are basically playing with a up up, down, down, level cheat code.

To find success, Tottenham need to thread the needle like the Liverpools and Arsenals of the world, where you’re nearly flawless in recruitment, coaching, and the academy all at the same time, so you can compete with the folks massively outspending you.

*to their credit, the insane money they spend their clubs have actually generated from their own insane revenues.

I don't know if you can with certainty make the statement "every bit of profit Tottenham make goes back into the club." Spurs paid for the stadium through loans and have the highest debt of any team in the prem by a ways and that debt will be transferred with the club if the team does end up getting sold. Also, there's more than enough where there's smoke there's fire on how cheap Levy is. The Brad Friedel being charged for his jersey's story is obviously the funniest one, but also, it was kind of a joke how Spurs used to always wait until the very end of the transfer window each time and then make laughable low ball offers for players.

Brendan Rodgers is out at Leicester, by mutual consent. With yesterday’s results, Leicester have fallen to 18th in the table. And if West Ham can hold on against Southampton today, they’ll be 19th.

Graham Potter joins BRodge on the unemployment line. Chelsea was 6th when he replaced Tuchel, now they’re 11th. And Tuchel is top of the table in the Bundesliga and has a UCL semi-final match next Tuesday. Chelsea also has a UCL semi-final match next Wednesday at the Bernabeu.

Aston Villa manager Killa. I really liked how the midfield looked with luiz and Kamara in the middle and Ramsey and McGinn (what a super goal) out wide with Buendia playing as a second striker. It is just so much more defensively sound with McGinn on the right side instead of bailey and Buendia is such a beautiful pest.

Exciting relegation battle this season for sure. Nine teams within four points of the relegation line on either side with nobody from 12 on either safe or out of it.

The last few weeks of the season are going to be bananas. Bournemouth wins and pulls out of relegation to 15. West Ham wins and moves out of relegation to 14, knocks Bournemouth down a spot. Everton and Leicester? WTF, boys?

Stability in shape and flexibility in tactics ... what a concept.

And yeah, the relegation battle is absolute fire this year. It's always a mosh pit down there, but throwing West Ham and Leicester into the mix with Everton has added to the drama. Nothing against Bournemouth, Southampton and Forest, but having some bigger profile clubs in jeopardy changes the stakes. Thank goodness Villa got themselves out of that swamp before it got to this point, because every weekend is an existential for that crew from here until the end. As a fan ... hard pass. As a neutral ... absolutely, gimme all the pathos.

I really wish refs in all sports were forced to explain their decisions after matches. It will be quickly forgotten, because it didn't effect the outcome, but the ref at the end of the Villa and Leicester match seemed to go through temporary insanity or possibly had money on the result being a draw. Duran is fouled, the ref calls a foul but doesn't say who it's on, listens to his headset and then awards the foul for Leicester. On the ensuing free kick, the ref gives a ghost penalty to Leicester. Fortunately, VAR immediately tells him to get over to the monitor and in the quickest reversal I've ever seen you see the face of a man who looks like he's thinking "there's no way I can get away with keeping that suspect call."

That last one, I'm willing to forgive and at least VAR did what it was supposed to for once. From the live shot it looked for all the world like Watkins fouled Daca in the scramble, but from the goal line camera it was 100% the opposite. The rest of stuff you've call out was just ... weird. Sometimes the situation just paralyzes these refs. Brother looked like a deer in headlights.

Honestly, I'm still buzzing a little for Traore. I've always had a soft spot for that guy and for him to just bury that gift of a mishit pass for the winner 30 seconds after subbing on was awfully sweet.
