2024-25 Canes Miscellaneous Thread

I won't pretend to have combed through every word posted while I was gone, but ...

What do you guys think of reports that Carolina will sign Michael McLeod when he's eligible to sign on October 15? All other concerns aside, he would be eligible to start training until November 15 and couldn't play until his suspension is over on December 1st. Sticking to hockey, McLeod is basically Jankowski with more attitude ... and a lot more baggage. I don't see him as being worth the obvious PR hit, but he'd be yet another discounted, distressed asset and the Canes freaking love those.

Thoughts?

We discussed it in the Training camp thread.

McLeod is great in the faceoff circle, better than 60% his last 2 NHL seasons. But he only averages 12 faceoffs per game. So even at 60%, he’s only winning 1 more faceoffs per game than Jankowski. Is that worth burning down your fan base?

There is also an ongoing investigation into sexual assault allegations against 8 members of the 2014 OHL Mississauga Steelheads. The alleged victim was 22 and was dating a 19 year old player. She did. It initially reported the assault because some of the players were 16. McLeod was a 16 year old on that team. It doesn’t mean he participated, and the investigtion has been ongoing for a while.

No to McLeod. No to Hart.

Not even if he was named McDavid.

I understand the argument against and every ticket holder has the right to do whatever they want for whatever reason they want to. But I do find this quote:

“We are writing as loyal season ticket members to make one point absolutely clear: if this team signs Michael McLeod, we will not renew our season tickets. Like any Caniac, we want the Cup—but not at the expense of the morals, principles, and reputation of this franchise. Signing him would send an irreversible message—that women’s safety, girlhood, and dignity do not matter to the Front Office, coaching staff, or players who would share the ice with him.”

a bit hypocritical.

In the 4 seasons this ticket member has had their package, this franchise acquired and then re-acquired the outstanding moral, principled and clean reputation of Tony DeAngelo. Again to each their own and to each their 'transgressions Red Line', but its not like this franchise hasn't prioritized hockey ability over reputation before.

Tony D is a choir boy compared to these guys. After following this story closely and reading all of the texts and other evidence, I want nothing to do with any of them.

FYI...Lenovo will apparently continue as the helmet sponsor for road games, per the Triangle Business Journal.
Makes sense. I vaguely remembered helmet or jersey sponsorship being part of their naming rights fees. Anyway, welcome to the Holden family of Wake Forest ... the folks who own 1st Citizens. It's kind of out of character for them to commit that much dosh to advertising but they're making a push to be a bigger regional player.

Speaking of which, we haven’t seen a jersey schedule. Red or black at home?
Yes, I think. Carolina only changed the road template and I understood that both of the home jerseys would remain in rotation. Could be that they've settled on one, but we'll see.

The Athletic's Metro predictions are out ... their writers chose Carolina as the overwhelming favorite to win the division, with NJ and Washington firmly in the playoff mix. The Pens are picked for dead last, FWIW ... and it seems to be causing everyone angina to pick Crosby to finish last. Then you look at their depth lines, defense and goalies and ... yeah. Makes sense.

They changed the whole scope of First Citizens when they bought Silicon Valley Bank from the FDIC after the latter’s collapse.

EDIT: They’re now the 16th largest bank in the country.

Yeah, up until then FCB had been picking up loose change, buying smaller distressed banks in California and Colorado as well as the usual junk in the southeast, but that was a much bigger swing. Not coincidentally, it came during a time when the bank's leadership was rolling to the next generation of Holdings. Old man Frank was as steady a hand as ever ran an NC bank, but he was also painfully conservative. Frank Jr and his cousins have been much more aggressive.

Mark Lazarus from The Athletic visited Raleigh and Las Vegas, the 2 most talked about destinations for Carter Hart and/or Michael McLeod. He got much different receptions. RBA pleaded ignorance to the rumors saying it was news to him but any player would be welcomed with open arms. Staal pointed to his own issues as a 18 year old, arrested for disorderly conduct, drinking while underage and obstruction during Eric’s bachelor party in 2007. Ghost, who played with Hart in Philly, said he was a great teammate but only wanted to talk about guys on the team. Hall said any player would get a fresh start and a fair chance.

In Vegas, a reporter for The Athletic was told to leave Bruce Cassidy’s presser when he told the team what the subject was. Their press pass for that evening’s preseason game was pulled after the team claimed the reporter ambushed Noah Hanifin in the locker room.

Lazarus also noted the online petition that has attracted more than 1,300 signatures from Canes fans.

Of the 61 goalies that played between the 2018-19 and 2023-24 seasons, Hart was 39th in save % and 54th in goals saved above expected. McLeod would be a 4th liner on the Canes although Lazarus refers to him as a capable 3rd line center.

The NHL and organized hockey have nebulous morals. Governing boards, regardless of the hockey level, have real issues and cherry pick how the needle gets threaded.

There was a concerted effort by Hockey Canada to cover up the behavior of a group of guys- if you don’t think anything happened, you don’t try and use a slush fund to hide the behaviors. Besides, just because those guys were not convicted doesn’t mean they aren’t guilty.

Joel Quenneville should be out of hockey. Quenneville is to Paterno as Brad Aldrich is to Jerry Sandusky.

Then there is the lovely Graham James, David Frost and even the charming O’Sullivan dad. Lots of people looking the other way, taking the easy way out and turning a blind eye because somewhere along the line these players had talent that others could exploit. So no, those guys that weren’t convicted, they don’t need to be in the NHL.

Honestly, I'm willing to look at these two guys from purely a hockey perspective and I still have doubts that they'd be worth the investment.

I think Hart was fairly decent in Philly as the system sort of deteriorated around him and he was certainly solid enough early on when they were a competitive team, but at his best he's what? A slightly above average NHL goalie? Maybe a hair above that? Now, I can see teams that would have a need for such a guy. Teams that are otherwise decent but routinely get below average goaltending. Vegas kinda, sorta fits that profile depending on how you feel about Aiden Hill on any given day. Carolina does as well but only when they get hit with injuries ... which seems to be an annual issue. Edmonton absolutely fits the profile, but being in Canada doesn't sound like it's really an option for Hart.

McLeod was a noisy player in NJ, but definitely a bottom 6 player. Good on the forecheck, physical, aggressive to the point of arrogance, but offensively limited. There's a couple hundred guys like McLeod for the 60 or 70 jobs in the NHL for bottom 6 centers. Seems to me like he's the absolute gold standard for replaceability so if there's any reason not to bother then you take it.

From Carolina's perspective I could see a weakly plausible case for Hart, but McLeod is a mystery to me ... again, sticking 90% to just hockey and ignoring the other stuff. You could certainly imagine Hart getting back to league average production, he'd be cheap and he's pretty experienced to only be 27. With no acquisition cost, yeah. There's no mystery why you would at least have the conversation. But McLeod? Nah.

Again, I'm not arguing for or against anything here, but this idea that there's some standard of team culture that would be violated by signing either of these guys comes from where, exactly? Perhaps those fans are saying that THEY have a standard of culture that they expect the team to uphold, but that's been poorly presented if that's the case.
