2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Edmonton picked up another goalie, sending a 2028 3rd rounder to Buffalo for Devon Levi and a 2028 7th rounder.
I wonder what they’ll do with Jarry. The money isn’t terrible if they want to carry three goalies, so I guess they could do that. But there’s nothing like signing two goalies to signal to your starter that you’d rather he played somewhere else.

The new CBA that takes effect in September changed the EBUG rules. Basically each team needs to carry a full time EBUG that travels and practices with the team. I don’t see where a 3rd goalie on the roster can’t function as the EBUG. The other change is that the EBUG can be employed by the team in a different capacity, so theoretically, Jorge Alves could be the Canes EBUG.

I feel like Edmonton can find a cheaper EBUG option than paying Jarry over $5 million. That said, with Freddie in the fold you always want to have a spare goalie around. That won’t change with his change of scenery

Freddie should have hung up his blocker and skates and pulled a Recchi and gone out on a high. EDM is just a paycheck now, so good I guess, but he’s just not consistently healthy and his performance this postseason will likely not be replicated. He found a zone, the series’ timing worked in his favor until it didn’t.

At league minimum, Levi might be the EBUG if that’s allowed.

I see the appeal of Freddie for the Oilers. If you get past the Toronto noise, he’s proven himself as a playoff goaltender (so long as he’s healthy) and the trick is to manage the load so you get him there in one piece. For him, it’s another swing with a team that’s likely to contend. May as well take that swing if you feel like you can still get the job done. Apparently, he does. I wish him well … barring a playoff run-in down the road.

Calgary finally got out from under Blake Coleman’s contract, but only by retaining fully half of it.

Calgary traded Coleman and Olli Maata (who remembered he was a Flame?) to Minnesota for Maata clone with a better mustache Jake Middleton and a bunch of picks (2029 2nd, 2027 3rd, 2028 4th). That helps the Wild’s PK a lot and is otherwise unremarkable as anything other than further proof that you can trade ANY bad contract if you’re willing to eat money. Also, pretty good haul of picks considering the low impact of the players involved. More GM of the Year curse action?

Coleman is in the last year of his contract and Maatta has 2 years left at $3.5 million per.

It isn't... and neither could Jarry or any other normal '3rd goalie' on the roster. Alves, however, would still be eligible. I've not read any exception to the rule requiring teams to hire an EBUG if you already have 3 on the 23-man roster.
Any emergency goalie cannot have more than 80 games of professional experience, been in pro hockey over the previous three seasons or played an NHL game on a standard (non-tryout) contract.
