Around the League 2019-2025 Edition

That's a factor, but it's got a lot to do with the overall culture they've built there.

Pittsburgh did the same for years. All their big guys too big haircuts to stay there.

Yeah. Players love being part of dynasties. FL has a legit chance to win 3 (or more) cups in a row. He’s not signing at that price if they’re in the draft lottery conversation

They deserve the cups. Multiple players all taking massive haircuts to keep the team together

They deserve it quite frankly

In a cap era, if you are looking to squeeze your team for every dollar, there is a pretty good chance you’re not seeing a cup
Story was written in Toronto when Marner held out until he got every possible available dollar, even though it meant trading a first round pick to get someone to take every cent of Marleau’s contract.

“We can and we will”, long-term cost be damned.

Tax is a big part of the reasoning here, but players taking less to stay with the best team/org in the NHL is nothing new. Beachfront property where you are annonymous is quite the boon too.

FLorida is probably number 1 destination for any FA

More than one factor for sure, which no one has ever argued. The amount of the discount that Ekblad takes obviously looks different in Florida vs Toronto (assuming Toronto had a potential dynasty going) because of the taxation issue.

This tax situation has become a joke. Taking $6M? I don't care how many cups they won or will win, that's not something a 29 year old is signing without the tax breaks. Florida is regularly getting $1M or $2M in savings per big player.

It’s the hot club at the moment — nobody wants to leave because the party is still going strong

Do you accept that Florida is a better destination that Toronto or anywhere else even without the tax situation?

That would leave the Panthers with ~$5 mill in space with 11 F, 6D and 1 G signed...
Which means they can't afford Marchand if they want to pay him what he wants and fill out the rest of their team. Unless getting rid of a guy or two.

Naturally Marchand will sign for $2M now, so it'll all work out for them.

Come on, rat. Do the unexpected here and come home.

If Leafs finally won a cup, it’d be interesting. The city would be like an all night rave and even the emergency goalie/zamboni driver would be a household name with an endorsement deal from Osmows

There's no absolute yes or no.

Ekblad being there since he was drafted and still just 29 makes him unlikely to want to move.

Marchand being there for two months and winning it all, and now 37 and a chance to make more than whatever they'll pay him and play for his childhood team makes him less likely to be tied down there.

Depends on the player and what he wants.

If he already has two cups, trying to win one for his home team would be enticing for the right guy.
What if the player looks at his hometown team and decides that they're a fraud with no reasonable chance to win? Should he still "come home"?
