BOOK REVIEW: Burke' Law: A Life in Hockey

I like most of your posts and think you're pretty rational.

But whenever you start talking Leafs, you go all silly hater on me.

This thing where people blame ONE guy on a team, as though Tavares is the reason NYI never got anywhere in the playoffs while he was there, is beyond ridiculous.
Except that the Isles immediately got better after he left. They damn near made it to the final last season.

You can see exactly the line of thinking that leads hockey executives to make pretty foolish decisions over and over if we're going with x team made it further in the playoffs this year than y team, therefore automatically better hockey team.

I loathe Bergevin but the fact of the matter is that if Bergevin had been the Leafs GM and had amassed the exact same record as he did with the Habs there would be a statue of him outside Scotiabank right now.

You old people and your low expectations.

We don't celebrate that crap here in the big smoke.

You literally held a rally in Nathan Phillips Square after choking in the 93 Conference Finals.

To your credit, I don't believe you staged another one after choking away the 94 Conference Finals so that's progress of a sort.

Only you old easily pleased people care about 1993.

No idea how Bergevin even lasted that long.

10 years and wouldn't have made the playoffs in any of the last 5 seasons if it weren't for covid.

If my fanbase rioted after a first round win I wouldn't be throwing flares around, but that's just me.

At least they rioted after a win, unlike Vancouver fans, who rioted after losing the final in 94 and 11. Rioting is a privilege of victory, although it would probably do more good if fans showed up to the team offices with torches and pitchforks after a loss. Fans in general are too easily pleased. They complain, but a 3 game win streak is all it takes for them to forget.

Because there were literally no better options among French speaking GM candidates. The reason Gorton was hired is because they couldn't continue the farce with Bergevin and there was no French speaker out there who wouldn't have been as bad or worse than Bergevin.

Sadly it sounds like Bergy was let go only because he wouldn't sign an extension. He wanted out. They got lucky.
I will say Gorton's hiring is fantastic Better than that comedy show in Vancouver. Habs found a way to get the best candidate and no one's upset he's not French. They can have their junior French GM prop do the talking.

Bergy had the best job security for years because there was no one to replace him.

I dunno, I hear so much about how huge a first round win is nowadays, this might be the norm. Back on this board in 02' we had fans of other teams laughing when Leaf fans honked their horns and cheered after getting to the 3rd round.

Remember in 92' when Pat Burns had to quit because he was destroyed so bad for the team losing in the 2nd round? How things have changed in toilet seat land.

I get great joy that the biggest win for the city of Montreal in recent years was the Raptors winning the title.

Rule is null and void for the Florida Panthers it seems.

Habs made it to the final last season too.
What was the significance of that? A non playoff team in any normal year.

How does a team get better by losing a PPG first line center for nothing, I’m curious?

You mean missing the playoffs most years, busting on every draft pick, and leaving an utter tire fire for his successor? If by statue you mean steaming pile of shit, yes.
