Eric Staal Thread

Well for a nice 2nd rounder offered, sure, hell throw in a prospect definitely. Some mad GM looking for an exp playmaker willing to pay? More. Otherwise, I do agree his skillset has been a welcome juice to the gears of the Canes offense, so an extention /new contract around these parts would be seen favorably indeed.

I am so ready for this Staal thing to be over one way or another. How many days until the deadline? 46? Ugh....

Me too! Both sides have done a nice job of keeping things quiet and respectful but as the days pass and we get closer to February the market has to somewhat establish what a rental like Eric is worth to a contending team. So much at work here, he has to waive the NMC to the interested team wanting him, the Canes have to be happy with the return on the trade coming back, the money and cap space has to be worked out and that usually means a contract coming back to balance things out. It looks more and more like a trade deadline rental than a sign and trade extension type arrangement for Eric.

Its not just his skillset. He's been in the NHL 7 years and made the playoffs in all but one year, gone to the dance with 3 different teams, and won it all twice. He's played 84 NHL playoff games, more than any other player on the roster.

Kopitar extended 8 years/10 per. This should make Staal the elder happy.

Difference between Kopitar and the other two highest paid players-- Toews and Kane-- all three have two (2) Cups to their names... Ovechkin- none; Crosby- one; E12- one. Granted, E12's next contract- whether in the Triangle or elsewhere will be interesting for term and for salary.

The more comps Eric's agent has to price him out of this market, the better. Because I do believe Eric, like very other player, will sign wherever he can make the most money...and, of course, passes the wife's sniff test...*cough*not Edmonton*cough*

The ONLY way we can afford to maybe hit something that would get him to the $7M bragging rights tier would be IF he would agree to a deadline trade that brought in two serviceable NHL assets.

Then we might could justify the overpayment to Eric for a few years in exchange for two ELC's that we didn't even have to give up an asset or draft pick to acquire.

Keeping an eye on the team cap 'standings'...surprised to see the Preds still have all that space and still a year left before they need to sign Johansen. Nothing else major in the pipeline to sign that I can see of either.

Couple of thought...

- Keep thinking of the Sekera trade... if the need is there, the demand is high, leveraged into a nice deal. I don't see any reason to expect less than a 1st round pick + 1 bonafied NHL prospect for Eric's services.
- Would be ok if we need to retain part of or even rest of his salary this season. It's expiring anyway..
- No conditions. i.e. If team acquiring doesn't make the playoffs, pick deferred bs.
- My early 'gutztimate' is with the Ducks. My memory fails me but I seem to recall some chemistry between Gets, Perry and Staal but not from what time. Juniors with Canada? Olympics? All-star games? What the three have in common is that they belong to arguably the NHL's best ever to date entry level draft, in terms of number and quality of NHL players it produced - 2003 entry draft. So there's all 'that'. :)

Oh pooey sorry for that. Basically - they arrive at the same conclusion as us. With one caveat. At the end the discuss the idea of Skinner maybe being shopped. again. only thing that I guess is total speculation based on the fact they were shopping him, had no takers, but his stock has risen, sell high thinking i dunno. personally - would be really p'o if they trade him now.

When TSN lost the contract to Rogers for hockey, we lost the ability to watch TSN's videos in the US. Not sure why unless it's part of the contract and market.

Speculation/Trade Talk:

1. Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens are the most desperate team in the NHL. They have won just three of their last 10 games as of January 12th and are quickly seeing their playoff chances get worse every passing day. The Canadiens must make a move now if they want to right their ship and bring the Stanley Cup back to Montreal.

Ryan Johansen would have been a perfect fit, but the Blue Jackets traded him to the Nashville Predators. They could trade for Steven Stamkos or even Jonathan Drouin, but who knows if their division rivals would be willing to trade their franchise player or best young player to them. They’ve been tied to various other players as well. It’s likely that they’ll be calling the Leafs to check up on their pending UFA forwards and see how much it will take to get them.

The Canadiens need more than depth. They need a top center. The best remaining center on the trade market? Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes. He is a pending unrestricted free agent. He would help the Habs because he would give them a two-way center and help optimize their lineup. Right now, there likely isn’t a team that needs Staal more than the Canadiens. So why not trade for him now before a contender loses a center and starts getting desperate?

Also read somewhere further speculation that after another loss this weekend, combined with that recent extra caricular no-no by Galchenyuk could make him available now, for the right offer... otherwise, most teams covet McCarron who the Habs realistically don't want to move since they don't have any other center prospect of his stature(size) in the farm.

Good morning....

Gal + Montreal's 1st overal in 2016.
OR
McCarron + Montreal's 1st overal in 2016/Daniel Carr
OR
Carr + Salary Dump + Montreal's 1st overal in 2016

No matter what the deal - aim no shorter than a 1st rounder coming back in any Staal deal.

It would be nice to have 3 1st rounders in next draft, for many many reasons already outlined. My view is this:

Let's say, if we do have 3 they'd all be somewhere in the range of 12th-28th (give or take to allow a little slippage)
So for example's sake, roll the old 30 sided D&D dice and divide by two. I got: 13th 15th 24th picks in the 1st round.
Here's what we do. Keep pick number 15.
Trade picks 13 and 24 for a higher pick in the first round. Which team wouldn't be interested in that?? For us - the aim is to get into the top 1-4 picks. Try to get one of those 'Beast Finnish winger friend's of Aho' or, bless this franchise's chance - land the 1st overall selection and a chance at one of the coveted 'next ones', a generational player... U.S. born phenom in Auston Matthews. Not likely, but I like trading up to get position 2 or 3 and a chance at Laine or Puljurjarvi (sp?).

It will take a lot as the stock of 1-3 has certainly only risen after the wjc... but 2 1st rounders in exchange might get it done. Heck, throw in a 2nd rounder too if it will get you Matthews!!

And you still have your pick at 15.

Otherwise, can't hurt to sit on 3 1st round picks and just draft the best players available at draft time.

Caveat, or risk waiting for the demand to drive up in the scenario that a contender (or more) loses a top line center over the next 6 weeks... :) Yes, definitely have to wait now... unless Montreal wants to pay for it. Anybody interested in Eric's services now before the deadline should not be given too much breaks (good return here).

If Carolina could get Montreal to trade Galchenyuk for E. Staal, I would do that even up....no needs for Canadians to send draft picks. Let's be honest, Galchenyuk is probably a better player now than Eric and most definitely will be over the next 5 years. That trade would be a no brainer to me, and one I don't think Montreal would ever make.
