Final Week Before Trade Deadline

Skinner may be (is) streaky, and concussion history et all, but there's also this little tidbit - Only Tyler Seguin has more goals for a player from the same draft year. Taylor Hall is a close 3rd, but after that the next best goal scores drop off considerably at 95 goals (terrasenko)

Yup. And note that Skinner has done much of that scoring while buried on the third line with iffy linemates.

Just my own opinion and two cents, but if a team like the Capitals added Eric Staal to that already stacked team, they would be a slam dunk favorite to win it all. How many years has an owner like Ted Leonsis been chasing Lord Stanley???

And as well rounded as the Caps' forward group is, they could use a guy like Eric who can contribute at both center and wing. And who has made a career out of playing well in post season. It would take a bit of pressure off of their first line guys, and is basically the reason they went out and got Justin Williams this off season. Double down Ted ... all we need is a first rounder and you guys are going to be picking low anyway.

This makes so much sense for everyone concerned.

This is what we did, however I can't recall but I am pretty sure that Recchi and Weight did not cost us a 1st rounder in return. That being said - both were well passed their prime WHEREAS Staal is just in a slump and maybe starting a little decline. There is absolutely no reason that he can't turn the corner back into elite level of play - change of scenery etc... PLUS, he has shown time and time and again that he is a POFF monster....
so RF - don't get fooled into the 'current market' talk, bla bla bla... a 1st or a high-end prospect for E. Staal - nothing less.

For Doug Weight:
Weight is in the last year of a five-year contract that pays
him $5.7 million this year, with Carolina picking up $2.1 million
of that salary, Rutherford said.

The Hurricanes also received the rights to left wing Erkki
Rajamaki, currently playing in the Finnish League. They sent right
wing Jesse Boulerice, center Mike Zigomanis and the rights to
unsigned draft pick Magnus Kahnberg to the Blues, along with three
draft picks -- including this year's first-round selection.

For Mark Recchi:
Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has acquired right wing Mark Recchi from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Recchi waived his no-trade clause to facilitate the trade to Carolina as the Hurricanes sent left wing Niklas Nordgren, center Krystofer Kolanos and the team’s second-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft to Pittsburgh

We traded our 2006 first round pick for Doug Weight. St. Louis eventually traded it to the Devils.

January 30, 2006: Hurricanes acquire Doug Weight and Erkki Rajamaki from the Blues for Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis, Magnus Kahnberg, 2006 first- (later traded to the Devils, who selected Matthew Corrente) and fourth-round (Reto Berra) picks and a 2007 fourth-round pick (Cade Fairchild)

Doug Weight had 33 assists at the time of that trade...more assists than Eric Staal has points right now and was making a little more than half the money Eric is stealing right now. Eric Staal has wrecked his market value by flat out disappearing on the Canes when everyone else on the team is putting up numbers.

I think Eric would be a best fit in either St. Louis, Minnesota, or the Rangers. I can't see the Caps affording him and honestly they don't have much of a need for him.

Trade Cam to St. Louis right around that home game vs. them on the 28th. He can travel with them to their next destination. Or even better trade him right before that game and then remind all of our shooters to go gloveside high especially on the short side.

I thought St.Louis tried the whole goalie rental thing a couple years back with Ryan Miller and it was a colossal failure? Jake Allen and his game is still a better option than our buddy Cam sadly enough for the Blues.

That is true. Jake Allen's numbers this year have been fantastic and he is really their 1B not their backup. Cam doesn't make much sense for them. What they really need is just a vet backup who they can start 3 or 4 times while waiting for Elliot to heal...that is not Cam Ward.

...that is not Cam Ward.

Why not?

I never saw Cam as an option for any playoff contender as their starter. He is exactly the kind of veteran back-up with an expiring contract that a contender would typically go after to support a younger starter and be available in case of injury. For a quarter of a season, he'll only cost $1.7 million, which can be partially covered by sending a player back the other way.

Kurtzie, just like Eric's contract, Cam's is a tad too rich when a lot of these teams shopping for rentals do not have a whole bunch of cap space available to work with. Now if a team was willing to send Francis a second round pick for Wardo, I could see a bad contract coming back...but does anyone think Cam could fetch a decent return in a straight up trade when he has $1.7 million left to be paid?
