Francis out as GM.....link

So who exactly is involved in the new GM hunt? Is Tom Dundon just going to ask for resumes and do interviews and pick a guy? What hockey expert is going to be helping Dundon with this? Is Karmanos going to be involved? Waddell? FmrGMRF? Any of the pile of assistant GMs we employ?

I almost sense that there is already a plan here and the new GM(and his coach) are just waiting to be officially made available. Who exactly has Dundon's ear as a hockey expert at the moment if RF doesn't?

Those are fair questions CMal, the vibe being sent from the so called inner circle media types like Friedman, LeBrun and others is that this Francis vs Dundon battle has been boiling over for at least 5 days prior to it being announced last night with some reporting that Francis almost resigned this past weekend. If that timeline is correct, you would wager a pretty good bet that the inner circle of the NHL was already letting potential GM's in waiting to give Dundon a ring directly for an interview ASAP. Hard to believe that Francis would be a part of the hiring of his successor if the media stories being reported are true. Waddell also seems like a dead man walking with this team, so I guess that would leave Dundon and ???

Don Maloney as GM and Dave Tippett as coach would be reuniting the old Arizona Coyote connection...does that make too much sense as a tandem deal? Maloney won GM of the Year in 2010 and his biggest move that season was hiring Dave Tippett as coach!

"Maloney, in his third season as General Manager of the Coyotes, steered the club through an uncertain and turbulent off-season, charting the course for the most successful regular season in franchise history. His biggest move was hiring head coach Dave Tippett, who guided the Coyotes to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2002 by posting a 50-25-7 record for 107 points and setting franchise records for wins, points and home wins (29) in a season."

Dundon can certainly look at the track records of anyone who applies for the GM job. Some will have prior experience as a GM so their records are easy to judge. For assistant GMs it is harder to look at their record since they are not making final calls. He does not seem like he would want too much outside advice on who to hire.

My beer league team is thinking I might be up for the gig due to my success GMing our team for 13ish years.. will let y'all know if I take any calls.

Well, this is my first full season as the GM of my beer league team and I already have us in first place with a 6-3 record!

(This is like a rematch of our youth hockey coaching days, Bill!)

ive been extremely reluctant to bash BP, but that 2nd period the other night really is it for me. Total lack of preparedness for what should have been the obvious. You play Minny pretty evenly in their barn period 1, you gotta know they're coming out harder for session 2. And if that conversation did occur in the visitors locker room, clearly no one listened.

I don't think he has a very good feel for the game and he doesn't make in game adjustments very well. When we're leading after 1 period, the team is 13-1-4, after 2 it's 16-1-3. But when trailing after 1 period, it's 3-13-3, 24th in the league and 2-21-5 when trailing after 2, 28th in the league.

That Friedman story is a good read for the quotes from Dundon. As much as Peter Karmanos was an absentee owner we have done a complete 180 with Tom Dundon. This guy is going to challenge EVERYTHING about this team. Once Dundon finds the GM he is 'comfortable' with and can 'argue' with, who knows what happens after that as far as the roster and approach to building the team for next season goes.

Whether or not this all results in organizational success remains to be seen, but its not going to be from a lack of effort on the part of our new owner, that is for sure. With PK and JR and then GMRF all running the show, we took a few chances here and there but were mostly 'safe' with on and off ice stuff. Dundon doesn't appear to be interested at all in safe. You sure as heck better know your s#@! and be able to clearly argue why something should or shouldn't be done with clear data backing your position ("no yellow only Green or Red" if you read the Friedman article).

I would say get ready for a pretty wild ride here relative to the first 20 years the Canes have been in Raleigh. I'm not sure any of us are really ready for what might happen next here. We have been begging for change in ownership and approach for a while...well its here, and its here big time.

he could hire a search firm to vet the guys who apply for the job. That is done a lot for college coaching jobs. Don't know if pro teams use those firms too.

Is that because we don't score much? If we're losing, and we don't score much there's not much chance of winning. Not sure that's due to failure to make in game adjustments.

LeBrun is reporting that the Canes have asked LA permission to speak with Mike Futa.

Quick look around reveals articles from 2015 onward of orgs seeking permission to talk with Futa with some articles referring to him as perhaps the top GM candidate that is not currently a GM.

Seems content in LA from the 2015 articles, in particular. But heck of a track record and resume.

I can see why they want to talk with him.

Is this really the answer? Are we really going to trust yet another guy who has never been an NHL GM to build this team in whatever manner that Tom Dundon envisions? This is the same issue with our head coaches. We go out and bring in an experienced successful NHL coach and what happens? We win the Cup. Are we worried that no experienced GM is going to want our job because of Dundon's expectation on how the Hockey personnel side of things will work and the long time losing culture here?

I mean, I don't know who Mike Futa is at all....maybe he is an analytical and hockey sense genius and exactly the right man to execute Dundon's vision. I don't really know. But I would feel a whole lot better if we are at least checking in with experienced GMs who have actually built winners in the past.

I know I’d be much more comfortable with an experienced GM. But a lot of that comes from having two newbs who had to learn on the job in a row. The right guy is the right guy. I just hope Dundon does some due diligence like a good little businessman.
