Free Agent Frenzy

I hate that free agency always opens in the first day of quarter end closing. Such is my lot in life as a corporate bean counter

For whatever happens in free agency, use this thread instead of the NHL thread.

Trade Frenzy too, with free agency pushing the trade market since there’s so little actual talent in the free agent market and all that fresh Cap space has to go to some freaking body.

A lot of mistakes will be made today. Look what Chicago gave Byram, 6x$12.5m is insane.
“I checked with the league again, they’re only awarding one Stanley Cup”

Brian Burke explains why July 1st is when a lot of GM’s make crucial mistakes that set their teams way back...

I always loved that quote from Burkie!!!

Always true of July 1st.

The market reality of the combination of a dramatically rising salary cap and a lack of supply in free agency means salary inflation is going to hit HARD today. Somebody’s getting that money, and it turns out that it’s Bowen Byram of all people. It's always bad, but today will be worse than normal. Artificially suppressing the Cap for too long after the Covid years is going to bite the entire league in the ass

GMs feel the need to spend. They squint hard and convince themselves a 35 point guy that throws the body is worth $7m. Again, insanity.

Case in point … AJ Greer got nearly $4.5 mill AAV out of Anaheim yesterday. Good bottom six guy, big motor, plays physical and can slot up if you need it. But he’s a 30-ish point guy at BEST and 90% of the time he’s going to be on your 4th line. Over-paying guys like that is a good way to chip away at your budget without really noticing it.

TSN is saying Werinski turned down a move to Dallas, and is fixated on Toronto or Tampa. Of course he's fixated on Toronto.
Actually, it's kind of weird for an American player to be fixated on Toronto given the run of things over the last 4-5 years. Still, guys like what they like and want what they want. But I suspect that if Werensky wants to head to the Leafs, then it’s less “obvious” that Matthews is leaving than has been speculated.

Apparently TVR has signed with Pittsburgh. Cool? I guess. He’s a serviceable 3rd pairing guy if you don’t expect too much. The internet is having fun with the obvious tampering since he signed 15 seconds after opening bell. Risking a tampering charge for TVR is a decision.
