GDT: Canes @ Flyers 1/22 6:00 - Rescheduled

Impressive win against a team playing really well. Faulk had a hell of a nice rebound game from his last performance which was great to see. Not much to say about Gerbe's goal other than "wow!"

In honor of Tripp's ridiculous description during the replay of Gerbe's ridiculous goal...

That was a solid performance by the Canes. Granted the Flyers to me didn't look like a team that is a major playoff contender..they looked flat and not anywhere near as aggressive as I would expect them to be.

2 bad plays for the Canes....the sloppy loose play at the end of the 2nd period that resulted in the Flyers first goal and the bad penalty by Nash in the offensive zone that resulted in the Flyers PP goal. Otherwise we played a pretty darn good road game. All of the talk of course is about that Gerbe breakaway goal (which was spectacular, the Canes are going to milk that one as much as the Semin behind the back pass from last year). But I was equally impressed with Semin's wicked wrister (please please please keep shooting like that) and Tlusty's great hands right in front of the goal on the game winner. Both of those other goals were world class stuff as well.

Needless to say, everything good from last night will be ruined if we don't beat Buffalo tonight, so no rest for the weary, we have to get these 2 points in Buffalo.

Pretty much a complete game and maybe the best all round team effort all year.

So they do know what it takes to win. Now we will wait and see how badly they really want to keep doing it.

Since the collapse of Montreal on New Years eve, the play of this team has been much better. The Calgary game and the first period of the Tampa game have been the exceptions. Last night the we're once again clicking and playing a cohesive game. Sekera and Faulk were solid. I hope, Lindholm, Skinner and JStaal get in sync and have chemistry. Skinner is back to being pointless since the big line reunited.

Totally agree...if you take two points in Buffalo tonight and follow that up with another win over Ottawa on Saturday, the Canes are right back in the thick of things. Lose the next two and you dig yourself an even bigger hole. Liked the effort alot last night, but dont lay an egg tonight and then cry fatigue.

Just sick. He doesn't ever need to take a slap shot, that wrister is filthy. That was a mirror image of the goal he scored against Florida last week.

Color me not surprised? I don't buy all that stuff about "more ice time" on the third line. Bottom line you can't tell a star that stuff and expect them to swallow it very long. Thoroughbreds want to run in the main event. The third line ain't getting the spotlight IMHO.

Except last night Skinner was playing with JStaal and Lindholm. Skinner got his big center and a guy who can slickly pass the puck and also make good plays and reads. Perhaps a move to see us roll two top heavy lines?

So, here's a question. Semin plays better with EStaal and apparently Skinner plays better with EStaal. Do you put all three powerhouses on the same line or do you try to balance it out and get two lines scoring that will be hard to match up against? At this point, I do not fault Muller for going this route. I also wonder if this is the answer to the question we've debated-- does EStaal need good wings to be good or do wingers need him so they can be good?

I think we all agree except for the fact that correct me if I wrong, isn't Skinner playing on the second line with J. Staal and Elias Lindholm? Anyways, I don't see the issue in interchanging Skinner with Tlusty from time to time or if need be permanently (i.e. Skinner plays a shift with Staal and Semin again and if he produces suddenly - put him back on the top line). But I would like the coach to leave as is. Finally, finally it seems that our super 1st line wants to play like a super 1st line again. Give Skinner Jordan and Lindholm some time to gel.
Also, I really don't have a problem with playing Skinner on the 3rd line if we continue to roll 4 lines for the most part. I still think the added bonus of him playing on the 3rd line is that it keeps him away from the oppositions top pairing that typically consists of their toughest defenders. Partly to give him an easier time pitting him against the oppositions 2nd or 3rd pairing and / or to protect the kid from hard hits..

I guess the above is all good unless he continues to not score when he's parked there. Guess only time will tell. Would be nice if we could roll that many good lines; here's to hoping we can.

First line got 16 to 17 minutes of even strength ice time (EV TOI) last night.

Second line got 13 to 16 minutes of EV TOI: Skinner (14) / Jordan (16) / Lindholm (13)

Third line got around 13 minutes of EV TOI (except for Dwyer's injury-shortened TOI).

I am curious to see what Jordan can do with talented wingers, and also what those two talented young wingers can do with a big center that's a bit more talented than the Nash, Malhotra, and Ruutu centers they've had to date.

I thought J.Staal's line was pretty effective on the forecheck and Skinner was really moving his feet. I just hope one of the coaches will pull them aside and coach them on how to actually cycle the puck. These guys have the wheels to keep a good cycle going and really tire out the opposition.

Yeah ... Skinner may have gone without a point, but it wasn't because he or his line stunk. On the contrary, they were quite good I thought. Honestly if you're going to play Jordan with two creative linemates, it might be better to let him move over to the wing. Just temporarily ... because it's not like that line is forever or anything.

As mentioned above, that was a nice team effort. Aside from Philly being really opportunistic on a couple of chances, Carolina held the balance of play for the majority of the game and looked dangerous throughout. And Khudobin continues to really solid in net. I especially like the response when they gave up the PP goal to tie it at 2. The boys tucked in their lips, went back to work and got the winner. That's what you want on the road in particular.

Skinner is a streaky player and he slowed down before the current line shuffle (no points in 5 games now). They need to give the new line some time to gel and it likely will. I am a full supported of the J. Staal, Lindholm, and Skinner line as the Canes need a legitimate 2nd scoring line and Staal needs to earn his paycheck. Let's give them some time.....
