Leaf Rumours

still not a big fan but it's pretty tough to keep gunnarsson off the top unit right now. i'm not going to nitpick -- he has just been very, very steady, and has complemented phaneuf very well.

you can't break that up right now, imo.

especially if they have schenn and komi in the lineup. they have really been able to ride gunnar-phaneuf, and they'll need to be able to do that if 1/3 of the blueline continues to be ineffective.

This is how i would like to see the pairings:

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Liles - Schenn
Gunnarson - Franson

Or flip Gardiner with Gunnarson. The key here is that we have mobility on every pairing.

I would like to see:

Liles - Phaneuf
Gunnarson- Schenn
Gardiner - Aulie

Ugh why put Gardiner on the top pairing, you have to remember hes only 21, and not ready to handle playing against the best players yet.

The best pairings IMO are: Phaneuf/Gunnar, Schenn/Liles, Komiserak/Gardiner.

Pretty strange (and that's the most diplomatic possible adjective I could choose) to post this after he was a minute-chewing beast against the Jets, and then played the most ice-time of any Leaf defenseman in a 6-2 debacle, and somehow came out of it as a +2 (with one assist). Holy crap buddy, do you even watch the games?

P84 has a weird obsession with Komisarek, yet he hated Beauchemin...we have vehement arguments in person on this topic too.

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Liles - Gunnarsson
Aulie - Schenn

Best 2 dmen on the top pair, 3rd and 4th best dmen on the 2nd pair, 5th and 6th best dmen on the third pair.

easy peasy - just play our best players.

Well, Gardiner is a rookie ... he's been stellar thus far, but just like Kaberle wasn't on the first unit when he was a rookie, neither should Gardiner. You gotta ease him in. BTW Phaneuf likes to play the L side.

Gunnarson has been very solid on the 1st unit so far, and you really want to keep some stability on your blueline by at least keeping ONE unit intact.

Schenn will turn around. He has every year after a slow start.

Liles isn't exactly exceeding expectation either. As a band-aid, I think he'll more than suffice, but he isn't exactly someone I'd lose sleep if we lose him after this season.

I wonder if the real Chris Pronger can sue this kid....cause i have literally found a new hate for Chris Pronger cause of his existance....and that doesn't seem right.

Not that I mind, but you used to have your sights trained on me. Lol. I will tell you one thing, this team is fragile, and Burke was smart not to put Reimer out there last night. The Bruins were out for PAIN.

We have a young team, and if we were really, really smart, we would tank completely this year, to get that Swedish kid. And then RAMM IT, next year. That is the way to do in the cap world.

Trade Lupul if he keeps going like this for a younger player, and I love LUPUL, totally. And trade Franson, Grabovksi, Kulemin etc.... Load up on youth.

And then two years from now, kick some ass.

Schenn and Aulie both looked great with each other last year. Should be an obvious choice when Aulie eventually gets called up.

I like the pairs but I would rather see Gunnarsson with Phaneuf and Liles with Gardiner (looked great together at the end of the Jets game). Either way, Komisarek and Franson have not looked like they should be part of the top-six for the foreseeable future.

I agree with leaffan2005, Liles and Gardiner are both smart so they don't seem to get in trouble defensively like the others. Phaneuf and Gunnar have been solid so no reason to mess with that either. Bring up Aulie and give him a shot although i don't know whether him and Schenn would work. To me they're both defensively minded and kinda sloppy so could be bad...

Teeds, you really need to stop using your stock analogy with hockey..Last month Kully and Grabo were untouchables, Franson you said is a great player (which he's not) and now you'd start a new rebuild and get rid of all those players? Yikes! Hockey really isn't your thing.

Liles-Gunnar is way too soft.

I kind of liked the Gardiner-Schenn combo last night.

To me the reason Liles and Gardiner can play anywhere or with anyone pretty much is because what they lack in physical ability they make up with effort and smarts. You can't teach these things to some of the players out there. When i see a 6'5 Franson and he's not positioned properly and on top of that he's not trying hard enough to use his body or stick to get to the puck first, Id have Liles or Gardiner play over that guy any day. Having a big guy like that only works if he's fairly intelligent or very aggressive on the guy that he wins battles most times..If he doesn't have either, he's no use to us.
