Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Jerks himself silly over 21-22 yr olds dominating NCAA hockey as well.

Yeah it's strange. Like sometimes he abandons guys that he pimped for years and then jumps on the bandwagon of a guy like Dugan who looks like a nice prospect but is draft +3 as a sophomore in the NCAA.

Where Pronman really started jumping the shark for me was when he became one of the most enthusiastic Laine > Matthews contrarians in the lead-up to the 2016 draft. Which was a prime example of him getting way too excited about the small sample size that was Laine's playoff run in the Finnish league that year, as well as his performance in the world championships.

Lots of recency bias with Pronman. Not sure his projection/evaluation goes any further than "this guy is playing well right now". I do appreciate that he goes back through all his rankings and analysis what he got wrong though. No one else does that.

there just seemed to be some bad disinformation floating around about lilly last year for some reason.

I mean, "scouts thinks durzi > lilly" was always really, really dumb.

Plus he already committed to his opinion that Liljegren isn't very good. Very rarely will you see him change his mind on someone after he takes such a bold stance on a particular player.

With Lilly, I think a big problem is that a lot of peoples' opinions on how he's progressed as a prospect are coloured by the top-pick hype that surrounded him prior to his draft year, and the subsequent disappointment when he didn't live up to it.

I'm sure a lot of people also judge him based on his pure offensive production rather than how he's being used, and how he's doing in that role.

Yeah, a lot of these fucks really struggle with the concepts of QoC and age-appropriate performance. A 21 yr old in the NCAA had better look a lot more impressive than a 18-19 yr old kid in the AHL. Regarding Lilly specifically, Pronman had always undervalued how difficult it was to just look functional in the AHL as a 18 yr old defender, and how impressive it was for a 19 yr old defender to legitimately be used in a match up role against AHL competition. Now that they've taken the training wheels off this year, we're seeing him look like a legitimate 2 way stud at the same age most Canadian defenders are freshly graduated from the CHL and are just figuring out AHL hockey.

I don't doubt that some scouts believed that at one point. Durzi was 20 and looked like a stud playing against junior kids, and Lilly was 19 and looked ordinary playing against professional men.

Fast forward a year and Durzi (6 months older than Lilly and now playing at the same level) is a #5-6 defender for a super mediocre King's farm team (11-11) and Lilly is the top pairing matchup defender for the Marlies (3rd best team in the league).

Probably safe to assume that had Durzi played in the AHL last year...he wouldn't have been playing in the AHL. Lilly was a good #3 for a contender level AHL club. They've been miles apart as prospects and yeah, that was one of the ugliest leaf prospect hot takes of the last few years.

At least it did work in our favour though, if the Kings legitimately did prefer Durzi to Liljegren.

Grundstrom unfortunately looks like he’s a player, though.

Kevin spends a lot of time watching the Marlies and was a big critic of Timmy last year even when he was playing well

Liljegren is starting to get the lilly junior skating going. Man, lets not rush him. Let him become Bobby Orr lite please. Cause that kid at 16, was something else to watch. If he gets that confidence going/back, phew, and this kid unlike my man Morgan, has a shot. And he can hit.

And please don't get me wrong. I am a huge Liljegren fan. Huge. I know he is too nice a guy, but part of me wants him to be the next Shea Weber.

He is getting sorta big and buff. He "could" skate like the wind at 16/17, and he seems to be getting to be able to do it again.

I want Borje Liljegren. Not a 5/6 Liljegren. But that is just me. I hung with Borje, hung with his trainers. Before he got into the white dust, he was close to being a Bobby Orr.

Coincidentally the three best dmen of all time, are built like most 20 years olds would love to be. Orr, Salming, Lidstrom. Bodies like a greed adonnis.

Morgan what you got going? Lol. Tim Horton who three 67 Leaf Cup winners said was the scariest guy they ever played with or for? And who could skate in those old horrible skates?

Lets look at his physique, ha, no Schenn there.

Salming at 65....https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Cn9wSg-WIAAMnEO.jpg

A number one dman in the NHL is a genetic guy, every guy in high school hopes his girlfriend doesn't wander over to.

Being a ex pro athlete of minimal consequence. And the best friend of Gord Stellick and sitting in the gondola.

Your number one dman has to be a beast.

Sandin? Number one guy? No.

Liljegren, number one guy?

IMHO.... Soon. Lets not rush this.; Salming came over what? 26?

BL, I think you and Zeke and Mindz are incredible posters, but dmen and goalies? Let em bake man. Let em bake...

I wanna see Lilly run and gun when he gets to the NHL. Not to rush in and become a great number 3-5. Call me greedy, but I want a Horton, a Salming out this guy.

I really thought this guy was the next Orr Salming at 16. At 17 I thought Orr lite, Salming sorta lite.

Lets let him rush the shit out of the AHL. Heck, Tanenbaum is paying him well enough somewhere, to hang with Nylander and have some drinks. Get this guy "trumped" up.

In conclusion? I have high expectations for this guy. I want a number one dman out of him. Nothing less. Larry will pay him well, under or over the table.. Keep this guy for the best times.

And he has a SHOT.

I think Doobie and I were both exhilirated, when this creature was available at our spot. Don't know about Doobie, but I still am.....

I think Illy has something to prove, lets see him prove it.
