New York Yankees (2010-2013)

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees signed two more pitchers to minor-league deals: RHP Bruce Billings and RHP Yoshinori Tateyama.

The 28-year-old Billings went 13-8 with a 4.31 ERA (3.96 FIP) over 148.1 innings for the Athletics' Triple-A team in 2013.

The 38-year old Tateyama went 2-2 with one save and a 1.70 ERA (2.18 FIP) over 42.1 innings for the Yankees' Triple-A team in 2013, after being acquired from the Rangers.

The Yankees have officially announced the signing of LHP Matt Thornton to a two-year, $7 million deal.

The 37-year-old went 0-4 with a 3.74 ERA (4.04 FIP) in 43.1 innings split between the White Sox and Red Sox in 2013.

To make room on the 40-man roster, OF Vernon Wells was designated for assignment.

Surprised and not surprised to see Wells gone.
This kinda points towards the Yankees not caring about the luxury-tax anymore though as Wells had zero cap-hit for this coming season.

Re: New York Yankees

A-Rod has been suspended 162 games, a reduction of 49 games.

The Yankees will save $27.5 million on the luxury tax.

Re: New York Yankees

The Yankees have signed infielders Scott Sizemore and Yangervis Solarte to minor-league deals.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the team most likely will not add another infielder on a major-league deal — so, no Mark Reynolds, Michael Young, etc.

Sizemore and Solarte will compete for playing time at 2B/3B with the likes of Kelly Johnson, Brian Roberts, Brendan Ryan, Eduardo Nunez and Dean Anna.

Re: New York Yankees

Jon Morosi:
• Sources: Yankees have made trade inquiry to Padres about infield depth; Logan Forsythe is the most realistic target, not Chase Headley.
• Yankees farm system is not strong enough to acquire Chase Headley now; Logan Forsythe could be a RH complement to Kelly Johnson at 3B.

_____

The soon-to-be 27-year-old Forsythe is coming off a poor season against lefties in 2013 but raked against them in 2012.

2012: .384/.465/.545 (187 wRC+) — 3 HR, 8 RBI in 114 plate appearances.
2013: .211/.282/.368 (81 wRC+) — 2 HR, 8 RBI in 86 plate appearances.
Career: .290/.363/.430 (124 wRC+) — 5 HR, 17 RBI in 249 plate appearances.

The Yankees have officially announced the signing of 2B Brian Roberts to a one-year, $2 million deal.

The deal includes a chance to make $2.6 million in incentives.

The 36-year-old hit .249/.312/.392 (90 wRC+) with 8 HR and 39 RBI in 296 plate appearances for the Orioles in 2013.

The team didn't need to make a 40-man roster move because a spot was opened with the suspension of 3B Alex Rodriguez.

Would be great if Roberts could stay healthy for the majority of the season but that's likely gonna take a miracle.

Re: New York Yankees

Francisco Cervelli, Brett Gardner, Shawn Kelley, Ivan Nova and David Robertson all filed for arbitration.

Re: New York Yankees

Always been a Roberts fan, guy came from obscurity to be one of the best 2B in baseball and then injuries derailed his career.

The Yankees have avoided arbitration with C Francisco Cervelli, agreeing to a one-year, $700,000 non-guaranteed contract.

The 27-year-old hit .269/.377/.500 (143 wRC+) with 3 HR and 8 RBI in 61 plate appearances with the Yankees in 2013 before injury and suspension ended his season.

Cervelli will compete with Austin Romine and J.R. Murphy for the backup catching job behind Brian McCann.

Re: New York Yankees

Mark Reynolds won't be returning, he has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Brewers.

It's been reported the Yankees also offered him a minor-league deal.

The Yankees have avoided arbitration with OF Brett Gardner, RHP Shawn Kelley, RHP Ivan Nova and RHP David Robertson.

Gardner gets $5.6 million, Kelley $1.765 million, Nova $3.3 million and Robertson $5.215 million.

That's a total of $16.58 million for the team's five arbitration eligibles.

Re: New York Yankees

As a Jays fan, I'd have welcomed Reynolds to play 3B for the Yanks :)

He's better off playing 1st, Yanks dodged a bullet IMO because Reynolds at 3B would have been an absolute disaster, he's worse then Encarnacion at 3rd.

Re: New York Yankees

Yanks should try and grab one or both of Ackley/Franklin from the Mariners. Plug both in at 2B and 3B with Johnson play a super utility role in the INF and OF and I think you get a good defensive group with good potential at the plate. Not sure what they'd have to give up but M's are reportedly interested in bullpen pieces and seeing as their are still some good relievers on FA, Yanks could easily move a bullpen piece or two for Ackley and Franklin then sign Balfour and/or Rodney.
