Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

Yeh, I don't get the Murphy comparisons. He's not big but he's no midget either. We will have to give him a couple of years, by which time we might actually need him. You can't think about today's needs at the draft. Or at least not only about that.

Faulk is listed at 6'0 but has always been solid on his skates.
Murphy is listed at 5'11'' but is mostly smallish compact in frame, so it's a slight 5'11'
Bean is 6'1'' tall, mostly athletic. Looks like he should fill out

Predictions for round 2:
- We have pick #43
- We're the only team of a short list (along with Arizona was the other) who have cap space. If any team needs to make room for anything - look for us to be involved. Datsyuk's contract is gone and that seems to add the Wings as potential suitors for Stamkos. Are there any other teams with players retiring (Lecavalier?) who might still have term affecting cap space?

Some interesting centers still around...Laberge, Asplund, Pu, Mascherin...unless Francis is thinking goalie at 43, it would be nice to find a center at 43 based on need.

One team James that is looking to dump a contract is Columbus but I'm not sure Francis would want to take on Hartnell's contract or Nick Foligno's!

Do we also have (the possibilities seem to increase?) more of a chance of landing a center in a trade before the start of the season? (in drafting another defenseman).

My feeling on the whole thing about drafting a defenseman is that as the draft went down he really was the best player on their list after the forwards they had probably an eye on were taken. (centers)
I am not at all surprised that we drafted a defenseman with our 1st pick either - it is a position of strength we have, will continue to build on and develop and reap the benefits. A couple of seasons ago I recall hammering home the point that I felt the org needed to build the team from the defense out. And here we are. And we had some early dividends and definite progress, even surpassing expectations on the backend. The route to get there has been a little unconventional now (see players rushed...or more like just earned and deserved to stay, or playing out of position/role) but we seem to be trending to having more and more depth and i can see it coming for both Charlotte and the Canes.

Like every club, we still could use a 'franchise center' of generational proportions, which club wouldn't? But J. Staal may still be that guy? Or maybe we have a real nice deal coming where we get a RNH and Yakopov for Elias Lindholm and a defense prospect? ;)

Hmmmm. What is Foligno's hit? too lazy to look :)

ok I looked. 5.5 mil seems a bit steep... he could be (if more consistent) some nice sandpaper+ tool to have... but his term of 5 more years just absolutely kills this for me. Damn. I kind of like Foligno.

Murphy is 5'11' like I own my own island. Only in myth.

Pascal Laberge kid looks good. No way he is available at #43. Not that big at 6'0, but plays solid, looks like a natural in every aspect of his game.

Hmmm take a chance on Yakupov? Make an offer of one of our younger prospects on defense and forward? Jordan, Foegele and Murphy? :)

Both Bean and Gauthier are 2 seasons away feim being able to play in Charlotte. Bean almost certainly has a CHL ticket punched for 2 more seasons so get used to him not being around, his pro career will start in the 2018-19 season .

Gauthier will be given chances to make the Canes as an 18 year old and/or as a 19 year old both because we could really use that size and goal scoring and because he is already 230 so the physical maturity is covered.

Kulikov & Florida's second to Buffalo for Pysyk, Buffalo's second and third. All picks 2016.

Actually, I know the numbers don't work, but I would (obviously) much rather Draisaitl. If the Oilers would really want Faulk? Draisaitl and Eberle for Faulk and maybe another prospect, like McKeown. But RNH is still a good center, just think Draisaitl has more flare/sand paper.

You gotta wonder with the defense depth we're accumulating, something's gonna give eventually where a d for f trade will emerge.

And his a rightie. Big factor imo.

2nd round 43rd overall - Janne Kuokkanen is our 2nd round pick. Played in Finnish junior league..winger 6'1 175. More of a project sounds like he has skills but needs to put on some muscle and learn not to shy away from contact. He will get his shot to play full time with men this year for Karpat...time to make the step up
