Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

I agree. He kills penalties, is decent in the face off circle and can play wing too. I'd almost rather him than McClement as our 4th line center.

Nash has speed and is more versatile. McClement, and I loved him when he was in St. Louis, is good on the draw but the foot speed has slowed. He brought some veteran leadership, but on ice, his age is showing.

Heard Peters on the radio (NHL Network) on Friday, being interviewed prior to the draft. He said he'd been in contact with many players since the season ended and Faulk's still not at a 100% from the slewfoot he took from Malone.

As is, we're putting a little too much expectations on our forwards. I would be more comfortable if we could add an experienced and productive center, someone a little more polished at the position than Terravainen/3rd line, not named e.staal.
If it is a one year role kinda contract through free agency or something more cemented and in line with where this org is going (a young but experienced pivot maybe looking for a change or available due to another team's depth (RNH))
Otherwise if we are shooting for p-offs next season or the one after (god help us) we have depth developing and we need to be patient.
Puljurjavi had half the points as Aho did this year for a little reassurance.
Anyway..would be nice to get someone else in the fold to add to the core specifically a center. I see teuvo offsetting more the loss of versteeg. Say he could be a decent option for ufa...but at wing. We need center

We need a forward under contract through the 17-18 season who we can expose in the expansion draft. Nordstrom is 1, the other current options are Skinner or Lindholm. Jordan has a no trade so unless he is willing to waive that he must bw protected.

Thanks for sharing that link Ben....so you think the Canes cleaned up in the draft? I think part of what threw me was the Jake Bean pick....I really didn't expect them to pick up a D at #13. Hopefully the kid works out we could use what he is projected to be good at.

Bean was the clear best player available at that spot. Clear BPA (with chychrun). The two d were a step above. No forward was close.

The canes mades the right move going d there and adding all the forwards later.

I actually had bean to the canes at that pick in my mock. I just saw in advance that it would break down that there wouldnt be a forward worth taking ahead of him.

Its good. I think francis got you some great forwards this week as well in teuvo, gauthier, etc

I felt exactly the same CMal! Best player available at 13 makes sense, what threw me was how fast some of those good centers went a few picks before the Canes that really emptied out the forward talent at the top of the draft. The Bean pick seems to perhaps become the tonic the Canes needed now to shop a young defenseman for a solid forward option.

A possibility or additional option, but drafting him just to trade him isn't likely as if that was the case they should have drafted Jacob Chychuryn (sp?) instead as he is arguable more NHL ready in frame etc and therefore might be more attractive in a d for f trade.

Bean is probably not the targeted resource to be exchanged in a future D for O trade.

Next summer, Hanifin, Pesce, and Slavin will all need new contracts as their ELC's expire, and we might even have another expansion draft on the horizon to prepare for since all current D-men would have enough professional years to be exposed to that second one unless protected.

Slavin's left-shot, behind Hanifin's left-shot, would appear to be an expendable asset at some point, good as he might be. And that's a good thing, since you have to give to receive.

Yeah, looking back on the big picture of that 1st round, I agree. Bean had by far the most upside of anybody left for Carolina at 13. Gaulthier was a need, and would have been a huge stretch at 13 even though I saw some mocks slotting him that high. But at 13 with a major value pick staring you in the face with both Bean and Chychrun, there's absolutely nothing wrong with picking the one with mad skills and passing on the safer option. You just can't afford to be blind to eventual value, no matter the short term situation with the depth chart. Bean's likely a 2 years in junior/one in the minors kind of guy anyway so judging need based on 2016 conditions for a player that isn't likely to be an NHL player until 2019 is really pretty meaningless. And with the D Carolina does have in the system, you don't actually need that kid until 2019 or so. I think both as a market and as an organization, The Hurricanes REALLY need to mature past drafting for immediate needs ... and evaluating draft picks based on the same.

I think if you want to take a shot at Carolina for being cautious and not packaging something to move up and take one of those big centers, that at least has some basis in need-based fact. But on pure value for the selections actually made ... no issues at all.

I agree, if for no other reason than it doesn't make sense to trade an offensive defenseman until his game has fully matured. This kid is a late bloomer so that's clearly not in anyone's best interests in the short term ... barring somebody else just being in love with the kid for their own reasons.

FYI - Reading a lot of good feedback about our 2nd round pick Janne Kuokkanen. Lot of people saying its a steal and that he will be a very good one for us. What is interesting is that he played for the Jr. except for a one game call-up to the senior team where he scored two goals. He had a lot of success setting up Jesse Puljurjavi recently and will likely be playing for Karpat next season.

There were reports of Boston looking scrambled when we picked Bean right in front of them.

Guess they were thinking we would go forward for sure.

That's two defensemen we've snatched from them, since all reports last year had them trying to trade up to pick Hanifin.

Not that Liiga isn't a fantastic place for your 2nd round pick to play but if Kuokkanen's biggest issue is physical play and putting on some muscle then he would likely be better off in the OHL then playing for Karpat (or Karpat Jr.) this coming season. That sounds like good news for the Canes if London successfully convinces Kuokkanen that he has a better development path by joining the OHL for this coming season.

I don't know enough about to kid to know if he has any intentions of even considering playing in the CHL, but if he does, London is a pretty good landing spot. Heck if Marner and Tkachuk end up spending one more season there Kuokkanen could put up huge numbers. Even if they don't London has other talent.

Our 2nd round pick may be playing in North America sooner rather than later. The London Knights selected Janne Kuokkanen in the first round of the import draft.

That should be music to Ron Francis's ears...especially when you look at the success that Dale Hunter has had in London with his previous two import picks from Finland...Oli Maatta and Oli Juolevi!!! Both first round NHL picks, both players transitioned very quickly from Europe to the North American game in London. That is great news for the Canes on Kuokkanen if he decides to come play for London next season.

So how did we get so much better at drafting all of a sudden? I haven't felt this optimistic in years- three years in a row we draft d-men. For two years in a row, we draft Finns in the second round and while they look like sleeper picks, they suddenly make us look all the better on paper. Our first round picks in the past two drafts have NHLers all over 'em. Who are these scouts and why did we wait so long?!
