Official 2016 NHL Draft Thread

I get the impression Gauthier had Brind'Amour written all over the choice. RF seemed sort of non-chalant about the selection, but did say like everyone see's, that the kid physically looks ready for the NHL.

I see Bean as either trade scrip or expansion insurance. Gauthier... yeah, I like.

He's all the above. There's the beauty. If an NHL team needs a defenseman and has a gloat of forward talent available. well we'll be in those talks for sure.

I am very happy with our picks. Bean is a really good pick, however a bit of a surprise. Man Gauthier, Terravanein, Aho. There you go boys.

Bean was not needed near as much as one of those centers, disappointing to see them all gone by the time the Canes picked but what are you going to do. I've never been a fan of the smallish puck moving D, especially after seeing what a dud Murphy has been picked around the same spot in the draft.

Just got back from the PNC - about a thousand fans showed up, so that was nice. Was sort of pissed about Bean, but happy we got Gauthier. We may never know, but I have the feeling that Forslund was expecting the Canes to make a deal with Edmonton - until the 3rd pick was made and that changed everything. Forslund kept looking at his phone the whole time between picks number 3 and 4, so I think he had word that the Canes would try to move to the 4th pick.

He doesn't look like a skinny kid - big and hulky - just what we need.

Bean is not small. He's the same height as Justin Faulk is and should be 200 pounds by the time the Canes are looking for him to make an NHL impact.

Yeh, I don't get the Murphy comparisons. He's not big but he's no midget either. We will have to give him a couple of years, by which time we might actually need him. You can't think about today's needs at the draft. Or at least not only about that.

Nice turnount at the PNC. I was talking to one of the security guys...they were only expecting about 500 people and well more than 1,000 showed up.

A couple of scouting reports on Bean state that he is a good overall package. A couple of years and an expansion draft from now, he could fit in just fine. Bellows was still available, but it sounds like he would have been too risky for #13. Only so much time to wheel and deal as well between picks, too.

It sounds like a lot of folks got who they wanted in Gauthier...

Yeah Gauthier looks like a good pick too. But the more I read of Bean the more I understand the pick.

And look at the cupboards now:
- Justin Faulk
- Jake Bean
- Hayden Fleury
- Roland McKeown
- Brett Pesce
- Jacob Slavin
- Noah Hanafin

Predictions for round 2:
- We have pick #43
- We're the only team of a short list (along with Arizona was the other) who have cap space. If any team needs to make room for anything - look for us to be involved. Datsyuk's contract is gone and that seems to add the Wings as potential suitors for Stamkos. Are there any other teams with players retiring (Lecavalier?) who might still have term affecting cap space?

I am trying to hold back on expectations. I think, ideal, you stick Gauthier in Charlotte for one season, at least to start and if he really earns it, you give him a look maybe long, permanent move the NHL during the coming season. The reason being is that it would be nice for he and Roy to develop a little together under us, no better place than a full season in the A for the Checkers. But then you look at Gauthier, and it's really hard to tell.
That being said, that assumes he is signed to a pro contract correct? Same thing with Bean right? Won't he likely play one more year for the Hitman? Or can we expect to see Jake in Charlotte too this coming season?

You know as we keep rebuilding you gotta also appreciate what this will do for the Checkers and will likely have more interest following them this coming season as there are a number of notable recent draft picks that should be playing there this season:
Nicolas Roy 6'4'' Center coming off a very good season in the Q
Aleksi Saarela 5'11 Center we acquired from Rangers - Will he be coming over to play for the Checkers?
Valentin Zykov 6'0'' LW who will graduate from the Q and play his first full season in the A
Haynen Fleury 6'3'' Defenseman who will play his first full season in the A
Roland McKeown 6'1'' Defenseman who will play his first full season in the A

Will we see Lucas Wallmark finally in North America this coming season?

Anyway, exciting times throughout the org. Will be interesting to see Charlotte this season.
