OT: American Politics

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

I'm not sure why Tories didn't win at least one seat and I don't like it. Given what McStupid has done to Ontario, they should have won with a cardboard cutout in both riding and yet......they are a distant second and they lose to Dippers in KW?

If that logic was valid the entire province would be polling completely against the Liberals. Without getting into a debate about "mcstupid" as a premier, you have to look at the demographics and neither KW nor Vaughan are the demographics of your typical PC stronghold.

I don't see how that's a lie. He's using a deficit reduction for more spending as opposed to going 'well that's one less dollar we have to borrow'. Everyone whose switched on the news knows it's all being piled on top of a deficit. He's simply saying that he's going to re-borrow at least some of the money that won't have to be borrow due to the end of the war. It's like if I had a credit card that I was paying my cable bill with (and not paying back each month). Then I decide I don't need TV, cancel my cable bill, and say 'I'll use the credit card to buy something else now that I don't have that cable bill". Perhaps not a good idea, but not a lie.

i can tell you that teachers devoted MASSIVE resources to this NDP win in K/W. this is a huge victory for teachers. in a solid blue riding teachers flexed their muscles and helped turn it orange. i think it needs to serve as a warning to mcweasel that when you play with the hive, you get bees.

Michelle gave a great speech. Biden gave a great speech. Clinton gave a long one that had great moments. They made better defenses then the President did.

What we got was 2008 all over again. He's basically for every single constituent group that exists AND reducing the debt by $4 tril in the next decade. In 2008 he was for cutting the debt in half within 4 years but, hey it's tough out there, I've got a few failings...

But, what we didn't hear and we were told we would be was the "how" of his plan for his vision. This we were told would seperate him from Romney. Except there were no hows. No TARP mention, no stimulus mention. On the environment? No cap and trade. Just that we've raised fuel levels. On an auto industry that saw their big sales spurt in PICK UP trucks. He said he would tell you when Afghanistan would end and Romney wouldn't, only to not tell us when it would end.

This was an empty speech. More of the same. Only on a longer time frame. And when they fact check it, it's gonna take hits just in the amount of strawmen he set up and knocked down.

The best thing of all was the prayer afterwards. Wow, finally something truly non-partisan. And "the courage to protect life" to boot? Who let that guy in??

I've had enough vision and I've had enough people absolutely dropping out of their job searches and we call it a win.

Clint was right. 23 million unemployed. That's where the blood, sweat and tears should be going.

This thread is clear proof I could never live in Toronto. Dear lord.

This is hilarious.

Toronto has a right wing mayor. The government of Ontario is a centrist party. And Canada is run by Conservatives.

It is possible to have a strong economy and have some social responsiblity at the same time. Somehow we're still able to develop a pretty big upper class here and we're still able to ensure that even the poorest of the poor have health care. Imagine that.

Despite what the Republicans tell you, you don't need to tear down every possible safety net or regulation, and make sure rich people don't pay taxes for a nation to succeed. There are other alternatives. Alternatives that actually work.

So how does Obama stand up to an AP fact check after all the applause dies down?

and my fave quote of his....

FACT CHECK: Obama and the Phantom Peace dividend

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama laid claim to a peace dividend that doesn't exist when he told the nation he wants to use money saved by ending wars to build highways, schools and bridges.

The wars were largely financed by borrowing, so there is no ready pile of cash to be diverted to anything else.

The claim was one of several by Obama in his acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., and by Vice President Joe Biden in earlier remarks that did not match the facts. A look at some of their assertions:

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/2012-09-05/dems-twist-jobs-numbers-and-gop-medicare-ideas#p1

thing is, the article doesn't actually check many facts. it mostly just runs through his campaign promises and screams 'but look, the economy is worse now than it was when he took office!'

and most of the facts that they actually check are, in fact, facts.

The riding was never solid blue. Anyone there will tell you they loved the incumbent because they were a great MPP that worked hard and looked out for the constituency's interests. It had nothing to do with partisanship support. It was up for grabs and the Tories ran a really shitty candidate.

Too many Italians in Vaughn (which voted Conservative federally) and too many union members in KW

Stuck it to the man! They're always trying to keep the little guy down.

Preach it!

Canada cuts ties with Iran, closes embassy, orders Iranian diplomats home

VLADIVOSTOK, Russia - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says he's cutting ties with Iran amid worries about the safety of Canadian diplomats in the country.

Baird says the Canadian embassy in Tehran will close immediately and Iranian diplomats in Canada have been given five days to leave.

He says he's worried about the safety of diplomats in Tehran following recent attacks on the British embassy there.

He's also warning ordinary Canadians to avoid travel to Iran.

People seeking Canadian consular services in Iran are being directed to the embassy in Turkey.

Baird says Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism and has been spreading anti-Semitic hatred.

This is true. She was well liked but she did piss a lot of people off by not sticking to her post. (all anecdotal of course)

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

The party *******s keep asking me for donations and I keep telling them they won't see a dime until Klees or Elliot are in charge.

Yeah it seems like a disaster running the show. Oh well.

Hudak blaming union muscle is funny.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak is blaming what he calls "an ominous display of union muscle" for losing the Kitchener-Waterloo seat his party has held for 22 years.

The Tories lost both byelections as the Liberals held Vaughan and the New Democrats made an historic breakthrough in Kitchener-Waterloo, winning the riding for the first time ever.

Hudak says the NDP bused in public sector union "troops" from across the province to help them take the riding from the Conservatives, and claims the unions "bought" the byelection.

Fox News is responsible for those headlines, but don't expect anything else from an article written by Dick Morris like that one. Or Krauthammer.
