OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

Not to mention that overrun hospitals will have no choice but to postpone care for non-corona patients, resulting in some collateral deaths

Yeah, that's a big one that won't go into official coronavirus statistics. Shitty beer virus or no, it's definitely going to be a period of time to be extra cautious on the roads, at work, in the kitchen, etc. The help you need, that we've grown accustomed to being available, might not fucking be there for a while.

That's been my playbook as well.

Freezer full of meats, homemade stock and smoothie elements (especially important because some sufferers lose their appetite)

Box in storage room with extra rice, pasta, sauces, pickled veg (giardiniera) -- all stuff I would consume anyway. Just accelerated purchasing on my part. And don't forget to add some treats like fine dark chocolate and your favourite chips/snacks/etc

Another gift for the wealthy....

Italy did it right in my opinion. Suspend mortgage payments.

True. They only did that after like 9,000 people had it though. You gotta do this shit before everyone gets it, but everything you do beforehand you're gonna get those folks who say it's all an overreaction.

At this point, if I'm bludgeoning anyone and taking their shit, it's the people who claim this is all an over reaction.

My house is consistently stocked well enough to survive for at least 2 months. Helps to have two people in the house who know how to cook too.

Yeah buddy, way ahead of you on most of the list. I sadly finished my batch of slow ferment dill pickles (first season doing it, only did about 10 jars and gave half away like a moron, will do more this season) but yeah I was planning on doing quick pickled carrots, peppers, cukes, etc this weekend. Was considering a chest freezer for the garage before this anyway, will probably take the plunge. Most people suck and frozen fruits/veggies will probably be one of the last things in stock at grocery stores if shit goes proper sideways. Most people disaster prep like they're packing for a weekend camping trip.

I'm more of a buy whatever I need for the next few day type of person...so this was kind of fun to plan. I hope I break out the box in celebration.

I did this weeks ago. Posted it here. Still fine tuning the storage box with special treats. I don't have an extra freezer but whatever I have is loaded up pretty good. I got way more stuff than 2 weeks worth.

yeah, I just realized that we buy 10kg bags of flour and not 10lb bags...kind of a big difference. That's about 25 loaves of fresh bread. We usually have a case (12 cans) of a couple types of beans, a couple bags of dried beans (black, chickpeas, etc), big ass "indian family" sized bag of basmati of basmati, big ass bag of long grain or brown.

Latin people don't fuck around with their dried goods, I used to be like CH. Had enough for like a week, maybe.

Yeah... This is entirely a latin thing. And baking bread is a fuckton easier than one would think. I will say, we are running a bit low on beans though. Plan is to stock up on those this weekend and we'll be good for months.

Wife and I are both cooks/bakers so we're usually pretty well stocked with a 10lb bag of flour, bags of dried beans, rice, etc. We have already cleared out a closet downstairs that is getting stocked just in case with dried stuff.

It's all stuff we would use eventually anyway, that basically doesn't perish. Freezer is going to be full of frozen veg and large cuts of meat (whole pork shoulders, whole sirloins, etc) that are generally cheap per kg, can be turned into all sorts of deliciousness and that again, would have gotten used eventually under non corona conditions anyway.

Only one package of kirkland TP though, so I don't know if we'll make it out alive.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I home-cook most of what I eat, so it's pretty standard for me to have a freezer full of large cuts of meat and frozen left-over portions of previous big batches of food I've made, as well as plenty of rice, potatoes, onions, pasta, etc.

For making a quarantine more enjoyable, I usually have a well-stocked liquor cabinet and a plentiful supply of home-made edibles as well.

So, fruits & veg are really the only gap I need to fill over and above what I usually keep on-hand. @CH1 's tip to stock up on some of your favourite treats is a good one as well.

My pantry items were always plentiful...but I usually don't bother loading up on meats. Prefer to hit the butcher shop regularly and see what they have.

I'm a good cook but I have never made fresh bread - so fancy italian bread sticks will have to suffice

If you have a decent mixer it's so embarrassingly easy it's shocking that more people don't do it. I completely understand anyone who doesn't have a mixer not doing it though, kneading sucks. Not even bothering with slow ferment (starters), it's basically mixing some dry elements, letting your mixer smash the wet into it and beat it around for 5 minutes with a dough hook, throw it in a bowl and let it proof for 24 hours, shape and bake.

Flour, yeast, water, salt.

With that said, the wife is a far more talented breakmaker than I am. I'm okay and turn out pretty good product. She turns out artisanal quality stuff.

That's just regular planning. I never need a reason or much motivation to buy that stuff.
