OT: Coronavirus Resources - and other things to not worry about

As a data guy in my day job, I admittedly geek out when my two worlds combine like this. I don't know if anyone else cares about this but I'll post it anyway! Thread on the Indian variant seemingly EXPLODING in the UK:

and not even a TLDR. slacker.

now I have to read it all myself.

I'll pick up the slack:

TLDR - even though case numbers of the Indian variant were showing concerning growth in the UK at one point, it remains unclear if the Indian variant is actually that concerning.

I did a TLDR and it ended up being longer than the thread. So I was left with a choice of whether to keep it for comedic reasons, shorten it (which would have made it less interesting IMO) or delete it all. I chose option 3.

Highly recommended thread though!

Should have kept it. Can't speak for everyone, but I assume we're all too lazy to read anything linked, but a tldr I might at least skim. I just assume every linked thread is like Tweet 1/213

Okay. Fair enough

Imported case theory is possible with this variant.

Sometimes an imported variant causes spikes in prevalence that then peter out; i.e. a variant is imported through travel and initially there is some community transmission that causes spikes that take us from nearly 0 cases of the variant to hundreds within a very short period of time. But then it can't compete with the more transmissible UK variant and it eventually dies off. This has happened with a few variants. It also helps that there were very few cases of the UK variant in some of these areas to begin with (20 cases in a town of 200,000 of Bolton)!!! So can you really say it was outcompeting the UK variant?

The Indian variant was sequenced way back in early fall 2020 and is only NOW becoming relevant. It's a bit odd! But cases are exploding so we'll find out within a few weeks whether its prevalence dwindles or not.

the new altair?
Zeke is more optimistic and would rather plug his ears about anything that may harm the pandemic; it's all in the name of innocent blissful optimism. Altair was an ignorant, arrogant, miserable, stubborn jackass. I know you were joking but I think you have gone too far!

so alberta changed the rules around golf and cases have been free falling
from 2000 new cases a day to 700

(also they finally closed skools)

Scotia has had daily new case counts under 100 two of the past three days. Trending in the right direction.

Schools are closed, borders are closed, restos are closed. Nature is wide fucking open (thankfully).

And our CMoH today told us that once we get 75% of the population having at least one dose, the majority of pandemic restrictions will be lifted. Did about 70,000 doses last week? And eligibility opens for all ages as of next week. Could be in for a reasonable summer... BUT another key, at least four week stretch to get through first.

Are you allowed to see people outside?
