OT: Health and Nutrition

Yeah, evoo is the best thing on the planet. They apparently drink shots of evoo in Italy. It's not really tasty enough on its own to do that, but it belongs on most foods. I think I saw this health guy talking on some video about how food is just an excuse to find ways to put evoo in your body.
we went to an evoo tasting tour last june when we were in italy, it was outstanding.. most of the oil produced in italy is only sold locally/regionally because most places only make small batches. at least that what they said at the place we were at.. we had some shipped home from there and we are almost all out :(
i usually get the Terra Delyse(sp?) from costco.. i wish there was a place around here to get it other than liquid gold which i remember being expensive

Haven't been to Europe in awhile, so I've missed the wonderful olive oils from over there. Since I'm a nutcase about my home state, I have Stonehouse evoo products shipped over. Stuff is pretty freakin' tasty:
▪︎ House Blend
▪︎ Olio Santo
▪︎ Lisbon Lemon
▪︎ Garlic

That's amazing. I'm so into it. And I did discover that not all evoo is created equal. There was one that I was using (a cheaper one) that tasted a bit more bitter. Then I got this gift basket in December that someone gave me from Eataly that had a more premium evoo in it and the taste was way better. Noticeably so in my salads. But since that upgrade made such a difference, now I'm thinking to go for an even more premium one when it runs out!

I dunno, man. I sometimes swipe up Stonehouse's house blend with just bread and a whisper of fleur de sel. Following up by dabbling in it with a finger-to-oil-to-mouth = longtime habit. 😊

I think quality probably makes a huge difference in the taste, per my earlier post. The times when I thought it tasted somewhat bitter or funky, it may just not have been high quality enough.

100%
There are lots of olive oil companies trying to scam ya.. one of the biggest ones is having oils brought into Italy from inferior areas, making the oil in Italy and labelling the bottle “made in Italy”

I feel like the expensive brands are more ripe for fraud than the solid proven mid-level brands.

but i could be wrong.

I also suspect some of the tastier brands probably use some kind of added flavoring.

all i know is eyeties are criminals.

I enjoy knowing where all the danged orchards are reported to be. They might be jerking my chain with their source reporting, but I'll take that considering the quality (I believe) I'm getting.

There’s two types of fraud going on

One is place of origin. As someone pointed out earlier, a ship can spend 5 mins in Italy and it’s kosher to write “imported from Italy”

Case in point:
Spain produces 766,000 tons of olive oil per year. Way more than 2nd place Italy at 288,000 tons but how much shelf space does Spanish Olive Oil take up at your grocery store or food boutique.

beyond branding BS, there’s also a fear that some extra virgin oil is cut with cheaper shit.

That was the conclusion by the University of Cali Davis who in a landmark study about a decade ago examined a bunch of brands in their lab. (They rated the Costco brand quite highly in terms of purity btw)

Critics of the study were numerous and it’ll be interesting to see how they make their case in their next study (out soon)

One thing you can look for in a bottle is the harvest date (most mainstream brands don’t have one because they simply buy a bunch of olives, the way Starbucks buys a bunch of beans)

I occasionally splurge on a nice bottle (for drizzling) and what I’ve noticed is that a recent harvest date (good luck finding that in Canada) makes a big difference. Olive oil doesn’t go bad per se, but the flavour does degrade over time. That’s why the stuff we pay for here rarely matches up with the oil you can get at some mid level Tuscan restaurant.

So far, the gals seem to be doing all right. 😊

I have a healthy eating schedule.

I don’t enjoy having something unhealthy added to every dish.

And if I am going to have something unhealthy, I don’t want to waste it on butter. Give me chicken fingers and fries, pizza, ice cream. I’m not obsessive over it. If there’s butter in something and I don’t know it and can’t taste it, what can I do. But I won’t ever add it to anything, other than a bit of it with bread.
Protein, fats, carbs. No evil food. Just Macros. Some foods/meals are more nutritionally dense than others. Your body requires all macros. Just in different allotments. You don’t want to have every meal laden in butter but it’s not unhealthy to have in and on your food occasionally.
