OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

So, Bateman has thus far kind of been the best version of what he was projected to be - fast, seemingly flawless CF defense, good contact slap hitter, and bonus: very patient at the plate. Super small sample but hard not to like what he's shown so far.

But even so, I'm still surprised by the Gausman trade. The fact that they came out after the deadline and said they wanted to keep Springer here because they needed him, but silent about not needing their #2 starter? Starting to feel like there's something more, and that they wouldn't want to bring him back as a free agent.

Finally, when is it safe to accept that SWR has been amazing (almost perfect, except for that fourth out call) and is perfect for his role?

They sold Gausman over Springer because Gausman had value and was desired. Springer had 10/5 rights and based on the return for Jo Addell was not going to yield anything anyways.

Gausman also couldn't be issued a QO, which Bieber could, which probably explains why he's still here. They tried to replace Gausman as well as possible with Andrighetti and Taillon, but both died, kinda unlucky, it was also not really forseeable they would go on a run at this stretch of the schedule. They acted prudently.

Moving Hoffman is the outliar, as he could really have helped and wasn't internally replaced or a pendign FA, but the return they got for him was quite good.

I'm glad Hoffman is gone, honestly. What happened in the WS has a stench that will never wear off, and having him around was a reminder of that crushing failure, whether right or wrong. It was a move that had to happen, and it's a bonus that we got a good return.

The Gaus trade is looking good right now with an expiring asset for a young CF who has performed nicely so far. I just wonder if they have any interest in bringing him back, because clearly he was attached and presumably looking to return. Or maybe they don't even know and would just evaluate their options at the time.

He's a weird case because he's been pretty good so far, in terms of results & eye test. But such a small sample size, so we have to weigh the value of regular stats vs. advanced stats. His ERA as a Jay is GREAT at 0.69. His WHIP is fine at 1.23 (not great but fine). However, the strikeouts are non-existent. 4.85 K/9 as a Jay, and 4.1 as a Twin, that's horrific in today's game. His babip in Toronto is .222 suggesting he's been very lucky so far, and his numbers will regress. His xERA as a Jay is 5.17, and in Minny it was 6.10. The stat that's probably the best "predictor" of future results for a pitcher is SIERA, and when we check that it's 6.06 as a Jay, and 5.89 as a Twin. The one oddity is his FIP/xFIP discrepancy (3.85 vs 5.83).

All of these numbers are really bad except ERA and FIP, so while it is a bit surprising as he hasn't looked so bad via the eye test, there's no way around the fact that he must pitch significantly better going forward, or he will start giving up a lot of runs very soon.

I love this. It makes for a really intriguing situation to unfold.

15.1 innings, just 1 (bullshit) ER. His k/bb rate is atrocious, but the guy has been lights out.

There has to be some point where, if this continues, he needs to be taken seriously.
15 innings is nothing, he gives up pretty hard contact and was DFA'd or a reason by Minny

Patrick Corbin looked good his first 2-3 starts for us too, but the clock struck midnight there too

Im happy he's getting results when we need it, but the guy is cheeks.

By the way, in 24 and 25, he was actually pretty good for the Twins. Maybe you want to say the super nerdies are bad, but the surface level stuff isn't. It's just this year with the Twins that he was terrible, and has made the sharpest of 90 degree turns that I can recall.

Obviously he's not 0.00 ERA good, but I like what I see in terms of what to expect he might be.

The #'s weren't great in Minny, though not catastrophic. He definitely needs to get back to those K rates to have a chance at being average.

(ERA/SIERA):
2024: 4.17 - 4.51 (7.88 K/9)
2025: 4.04 - 4.47 (8.65 K/9)

25 years old. Doubt he just totally fell off a cliff based on 12 appearances this season.

There's cause to be optimistic that he might actually end up being pretty good and reliable.

It's definitely possible he can get back to how he pitched the last 2 years, and hopefully we can help him tweak his pitch mix to be better, and the fact that we have a really good defense is great for a guy like this.

I mean, I just keep going back to 12 appearances (10 starts) and am not really persuaded by the significance of it.

Granted, 15 innings is even more insignificant, but new team and great results means I'm in until he proves he's not good.

He doesnt K anyone and has below average stuff.

Did you believe in Corbin as well?

Again, love that he's been fine, results wise, but this guy is probably next on the chopping block if when Agrihetti/Yesavage come back, depending on how cooked Sewald is. Ideally i dont want either of Sewald/SWR pitching for us
