Play-in Round: Toronto Maple Leafs (8) vs Columbus Blue Jackets (9)

Presto cursed them.
Series played out exactly how I expected times 10. Hilariously bad luck. But 5 game samples often result in these goofy stats. A couple years ago if I remember correctly Chicago had under a 1% s% and they got swept. It's a miracle that the leafs even won a game really.

Regular season:

TOR

Yep. Also getting in front of everything. After the game Tavares said one of the reasons he hit the post on the open net was because he had to get the shot around Jones, so he went shortside instead of burying it in the middle of the wide open net.

Keefe said they played a good defensive series but:

CA/60: 57.95
GA/60: 2.15
xGA/60: 1.77

Columbus Regular Season:

CF/60: 53.45
GF/60: 2.16
xGF/60: 2.18

They can't confuse Columbus sucking at offense with playing good defense.

At the end of the day they got hurt by luck against a team that based on your expectations of the team (not my own expectations personally), luck should not have been a major factor against . But luck only mattered this much because there is not much separating these two teams. That's just hockey folks.

Im terms of results all year, definitely. In terms of roster potential, I don't think it's close.

Yeah they have guys that make a lot of money. But they haven't played with any sort of quality or consistency for years so I'm not going to expect them to suddenly become the 80's Oilers because it's playoffs. There's a large enough sample size to support my opinion that they're a slightly above average team, a clear leg down from the top tier squads in the Show.

So after seeing what Joonas whathisname is doing vs Tampa, can we give the Leafs any credit for running into a hot goalie?

Nope.

Not from me, anyway. Between their thoroughly mediocre regular season this year and complete lack of playoff success so far, they haven't earned the benefit of the doubt.
