He’s not even stepping aside, Molson has found a walkaround political solution.
Gorton will be the defacto GM but with a glorified title since the GM needs to do media sessions in French, the Assistant GM will be given a fake GM title and perform the media duties along w AGM functions - while Gorton quietly does the GM gig in peace & quiet maybe even from his home in Mass

Time will tell - Gorton’s not going to have the benefit for Panarin, Fox & Trouba types restricting themselves to one team, he’s going to the polar end of desired player destinations
Kakko, Lafreniere & Kravtsov don’t look like world beaters either
We still want him. Whether he ultimately succeeds is a different issue. I assume that most here liked the Gainey hiring at the time.

The crux of the problem is there are no McDavid of GMs out there anywhere - it’s all about right person for right situation in the right market.
I know you’ve convinced yourself otherwise but Marc Bergevin is not a very good GM. He’s okay at making trades but that’s about it.

I think there needs to be GM and philosophy change in the Habs, especially amateur drafting .. I’m not even questioning that.
But what if Gorton comes in and “decides to continue down the MB path”?
The elephant in the room is what is Gorton’s mandate? If it’s no rebuild allowed and we need to retool on the fly while trying to make the playoffs?
Gorton will no longer be GM of the #1 desired NHL geographic locale…
