The Chantel Thread

I agree with CRE. I don't condone impaired driving, but we've gotten so sensitized to this and the levels are so low now that blowing a .08 doesn't actually mean she was impaired, it means she was legally over the limit. If we're going to be that nit picky about alcohol, then we probably ought to remove the radios, phones, GPS, passengers etc from vehicles as well, and not allow eating while driving either.

As for 1AM outside a bar driving impaired, vs the same level of impairment due to cold meds at 5PM someplace, I'd think she's far less danger at 1AM outside the bar. However, nobody's going to judge her for taking cold medicine because that's not in the cross-hairs of the PC crowd that drives our society.

Well said and this is exactly my POV w all this. I just suck at communicating. :)

Are there a number of cold-medicine induced traffic accidents that eclipse drunk driving accidents? Is this more common than I'm aware of? Or maybe I should be asking what these OTC cold meds are because they don't sound like the type I have ever taken (as compared to what I'm like after a few drinks -- when I used to drink).

I'd bet a Storm Squader would get the boot after a DUI (though no, I don't know this)...I would think just about anyone that has face/name recognition for a pro org is going to have fallout, period.

Re: Training Camp Thread

For the record, I've lost somebody I care about on both sides of this equation. An impaired driver and somebody who got run into by one. One dead, the other permanently damaged. So yeah. My opinion both counts and doesn't really need much defending. If you're not 100% straight, then don't get behind the wheel of an automobile. Don't really care about your excuses. Don't really care about your career.

I've fired guys for pulling a DUI/DWI. Darned right I have.

So you're saying you have fired people based on biased personal opinions? Or did those people operate drivable equipment and broke a company policy that they previously agreed to?

Sorry for your losses and experiences BTW.

Jeff O'Neill got an open container, a DWI and I think public urination in 2005-- what did he lose? A job? Ice time? mandatory enrollment in the league's SA program? Interesting to me how this will unfold-- no tolerance rule? Treating players differently than employees? Do they wait until a judgement is made or just based on the arrest itself? Double standard? Or are there contractual obligations in Ms. McCabe's contract such a morality clause... At least I am glad the Hurricanes don't seem to be having a knee jerk reaction to this and appear to want all details.

In the case I referenced, an employee directly violated a company policy with full knowledge aforethought.

I have also fired people for biased personal opinions, as has anyone who's ever fired anyone for performance related reasons. Let's be realistic here ... all subjective performance reviews are based on personal opinions. And if you want to be existential, ALL company policies are created based on collective personal opinions and value systems. Yeah. There's that.

My opinions, however, remain my own and mine alone. For my own reasons and based on my own personal value systems.

For the record, my stance on O'Neil was basically the same as the current discussion. I wanted him gone for that behavior and I think you all know I was and still am fond of the guy personally. I'm nothing if not consistent. In my book, holding somebody to a certain level of conduct does NOT mean that you stop valuing them as a human being or stop caring about their welfare. In fact, it means the opposite.

I have lost and aunt and uncle to a drunk driver that had 3 previous DUI's THAT year and his blood alcohol was all over .30 when he was arrested every time. His dad was a police chief too.

But there is a big difference what that guy did and some driving at .09 once. I don't drink and drive now but I did when I was in my early 20's about 20 years ago. It wasn't as big a deal back then. Now I don't have to worry about it because I don't go out to drink.

I understand and respect your no tolerance policy. Humans have faults and people make mistakes. Whether she gets fired or not should depend on the Canes policy and details of the situation. They are not firing Skinner or Staal if they get a DUI.

I guess I'll point this out since you are stuck on it.

The warnings on the back of every package of cold & allergy medicine clearly state that the drugs may cause drowsiness, dizziness and sometimes the "shakes". They also warn you about operating a motor vehicle while taking these medicines. Impaired driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration conservatively estimates that 100,000 police-reported crashes are the direct result of driver fatigue each year. This results in an estimated 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries, and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

Texting while driving is the number 1 cause of deaths among teenagers behind the wheel. Would we all be calling for her job if she were ticketed for texting while driving? Probably not.

That being said. Drunk driving is still the number 1 cause of road deaths in the US among all age groups and we should all be diligent with our actions. Let this discussion be a reminder for all of us.

Do people think Forslund, Kation or Tracy would be fired for a DUI? I don't. Not for just 1. If it was the 2nd or 3rd case then I think they would be fired. I am not sure why she would be treated differently than those 3 guys. But I guess she's new and not part of the "family" , at least not yet.

I am not sure if she survives, but if she does most likely she will have to do some kind of rehab or classes.

She'll have to do classes just to address her legal situation.

I don't know if the 3 you listed would get fired (and we don't know if she will), but I'm not sure every employment situation is going to be treated identically anyway. (and maybe we'll never know because none of them would put themselves in that position? I mean, we could guess all day.) I guess she's not "family" but she got a gem of a job as a 23 year old and Bob Harwood was not re-signed, so she's had some good fortune her way too.

I'm not really "stuck" on this, but I'm just confused about the comparison. I understand you are stuck on "impaired" but I guess I'm talking about my own practical experience with the 2 sets of people.

As far as texting...I wish every person I see doing that WOULD get ticketed and harshly fined. It's a ridiculous dangerous habit and I won't be surprised or disappointed to see laws/punishment evolve like the DUI laws have.

I quit riding motorcycles because of too many close calls with people not paying attention. I suspect most were texting.

I think phones are more dangerous than drunk drivers right now. More people are driving impaired, because they are too busy messing with their phones, than people are driving after drinking. Doesn't justify either though. I'd like to see the laws changed, and more strictly enforced regarding both. I have NO problem with people caught using their phones while driving, being as strict as automatic 60 day license suspension. I think a DUI should be an automatic 1 year driving ban.
