The Expansion Draft

Man, maybe McPhee's selling his cap space cheap after all. A first round pick doesn't seem like much of a price to pay to take on about $9M worth of cap dump (Kuly & Grabbo), and passing up on the likes of De Haan, Nelson or Strome.

Well, they did say they believe in building a team through the draft, and not the expansion draft.

And frankly, I kinda agree with them. I think I'd also want the 15th overall and take a shot at the BPA and develop him myself.
 
Yes, that's almost $10M of salary, but only for 1 more season ... 15th overall pick is a pretty sweet deal for expansion team to take on those 2 contracts
 
I know the NHL probably won't allow this but it'd be pretty fascinating to see a video of Vegas' war room trying to decide this all. Such a wide variety of possible approaches.

Sure.

Just at $10M it makes more sense to me from the Isles perspective than when I initially thought it was just Kulemin.
 
They are starting a team from scratch. Guys like Nelson, De Haan and Strome aren't goijng to change the fortunes of the franchise. Load up on picks and increase your odds of drafting franchise changing players.

Isles did a great job

Able to keep Strome, De Haan, Pulock, Pelech, Nelson and dump that Russian moneys.

They can make a real run at Duchene and not lose anything

The NMC's of Boychuk, Ladd, Leddy, Hamonic were deadly, and they had to protect Nelson, Pelech, Strome and Pulock.

This trade was easily the most sensible thing they could have done.

Actually, NYI is now my front runner for Oshie

Are any of those 3 really building blocks for a champion?

If there's a commonality among champion level teams, it's that they're anchored by champion level core players. As much as landing one of those 3 as a gift wouldn't be bad for Vegas, you've gotta think that they'd rather take their chances in pulling high end kids out of the draft rather banking on any of those 3 turning into a legit core player. Shit, Ryan Strome has had 2 ~30 point seasons in a row and is almost 24.
 
aging bubble teams giving up assets to keep their rosters in tact is short sighted.

look at the islanders.

josh bailey will be 28 years old on opening night and has never topped 16 goals in a 9 year career.

ryan strome had a nice 14-15, but has produced at a 3rd/4th line rate over the past two seasons (and even found himself demoted in 15-16).

calvin de haan is a #4/5 defenseman with limited upside.

these guys are good players, but they're all just depth pieces. and hte islanders don't really bat an eye from losing any of them.

coughing up first rounders to keep those guys hurts more than it helps.

and it'd be LOL if they freed up the grabo/kulemin cap space only go out and add ladd and oshie in B2B summers.
