The Expansion Draft

Why are the trades secret? I don't get why they can't announce them as they happen. What's the point?
The NHL wants the ratings for its' awards show to be as high as possible. That's pretty much what it comes down to.

They'll be announcing all of the expansion picks & trades throughout that show.

What??

I've never watched an awards show and won't start now.

What a shitty way of announcing all the news. This is like CNN announcing the news only during episodes of the Kardashians. No thanks.

Yeah, it is annoying that they've bundled the two together like they have. I would have been interested in watching a broadcast entirely devoted to announcing the expansion picks and trades, but I don't really have any interest in watching a lame awards show hosted by whatever D-list celebrity the NHL was able to scrape from the bottom of the Hollywood barrel this year.

The good news is that you can easily just follow along with the moves as they come out on twitter, or likely on this site as well.

If NHL wanted more people to watch their lame awards show then they better find a way to get rid of all of social media and the entire internet while you're at it. I'll be checking the full results once its all said and done.

I would definitely watch a show dedicated just to the Expansion Draft but I'll probably skip the awards. Or maybe just keep an eye on twitter and tune in to see Matthews get his Calder.

I usually have the awards on my tablet on my desk while I watch a movie or something with my wife. Once in a while glance down to see what's going on. This year though, I'll definitely pay attention to the Calder and the Jack Adams.

The Sports awards shows are usually lame, the NHL one is especially lame. I'll just catch up on all the trades after ...

The Leafs are one of the teams working on a deal with Vegas. McPhee says LouLam had travel issues yesterday and they'll talk more today.

Also says they'll have too many defensemen and that some of the players they pick will be traded the next day.

Scott Burnside says McPhee has said that they are going to load up on D as part of their formula this year (along with being good in goal and offensive wingers). If that's true, would they give up any Dmen they acquire in a the expansion draft to get more draft picks and prospects?

Based on mcphee's comments it looks like this is the year to get a d. If they don't get one now they never will. So much available. McPhee flat out said he's going to pick a bunch and trade a bunch the next day. He also flat out said he's negotiating with Lou.

So it's pretty much a lock they come out of this with a brand new d. Let's hope it's the correct one. Demers would be ****ing fabulous. Not so hot on vatanen and Manson is likely protected.. not too hot on dumba either.. but demers? I think he's the one unprotected d that I'm all over.

Yep:

George McPhee: "We're going to have to move some defencemen because we're going to claim a bunch."

Check that. Chris Johnson quotes McPhee: "we are going to have to move some defensemen because we are going to claim a bunch".

Nice.
