The Good The Bad & The Ugly - Game 4 - Habs vs Lightning

Quite the annoying fallout from this game on the Fan590 here in Toronto. From the Bob McCown show...

"What has caught your eye so far in the NHL season"...." um-mm the Tampa Bay game against Montreal". "They were so dominating, Stamkos could be the next MVP, Hedman may win the Norris".

We are the only team not allowed to lose. Doesn't matter we have travelled more than anyone so far and played more games. Just ignore them.

I didn't think they were anything special until Stamkos scored their third goal and we completely fell apart after that.

nor tonight against the devils.

You can't analyze a team in one game... every team in the NHL will have some games this season where they get blowout wins, and some blowout losses. Even the Sabres are gonna look great on a few nights.

Yup, that's precisely why I don't care much about Monday's result. Losing like that sucks, but shit, it was the fourth game in six nights with minimal practice time.

I fully expect them to play a whole 'lot better on Thursday and trounce the Bruins.

The PP impotency is on the coaches.

The pk misses Gorges. Weaver is not doing the job they thought he could do in place of Gorges. Gilbert was not brought in to replace Gorges, he was brought in to bolster puck movement. Weaver was supposed to replace Gorges' shot blocking and PK ability.

The pk was pretty good in the first three games.... they gave one to the leafs (not exactly a traditional pp goal either... lost a battle in the corner on a dump in and a pass out front... wasnt the normal pp setup type of thing) shutout the caps... and gave 1 to the flyers. Not great but not terrible.

The tampa 2/4 performance is magnified. I look at it as that entire game sucked from price to subban to markov to the pk unit to the pp unit.... all of it.

Im willing to give the pk unit a pass.

The pp has sucked for four games. Im not giving them a pass

That said habsy is right in weaver takes gorges pk minutes and gilbert his even strength minutes

Seriously, can someone describe what is the Habs' defensive system. Do the players have to respect a 1-3-1 formation and rely mainly on our power play to score goals. No team will generate much offense playing 1-3-1. In a recent game, I noticed we got our first shot on goal at the 18:00 minute mark in the first period.

Lately, the Habs have a hard time setting the pace at the beginning of games. Shots on goal during the first period are often at a 2 to 1 ratio and sometimes higher in favor of our opponents.

MT keeps telling his players that they are grinders and that they must play the right way. What is the right way? When should Michel Therrien tell his players to stop playing the system during a game? Only in the third period, when we're down by 2 goals or more?

I see them forechecking with two men on a dump but they will drop back to a 1-2-2 if the other team has clear possession.

I don't think they've changed the way they play as the game progress. The only difference I notice when we're down in the third is the defensemen being activated more in the offensive zone and taking a bit more chances in keeping the play alive in the offensive zone. The slow starts that we've experienced were more about execution than strategy.

We're 7th in the league in goals scored at 5 on 5 btw.

It's not like we've been relying on our PP to score goals. We haven't scored on the PP at all.

Yup, we are sending in two forecheckers initially but the D doesn't always activate. John Cooper has said that he wants five man units on both O and D. I think he's right.

Jon Cooper has a very fast team, the Habs collective D is relatively slow, and unable to push the pace.

I like when the D activates but I understand being more conservative at the beginning. You don't want to start giving 2-1 early in the game. Mind you, even by being conservative our D got caught quite a bit in the beginning of games.

Well if that combover nerd we hammered last playoffs says so,,,,?

Tampa's lawyer coach doesn't wear glasses. He just has an arrogant smirk that makes Lindy on the road and Ruff at home proud.
