The New Division

There's also the fact that the sens can't afford to spend to the max every year. that magnifies any overpayments.

I think the "can't" days are over, now it's lip service. At least I hope it is.

I think the fact that Cowen is an RFA before they expected it is part of the problem. He is going to get paid more than he should. It won't be Cam Barker bad...well when that was bad.

I agree that he isn't worth big money yet, as he hasn't really done anything at the NHL level.

He wants to be paid for potential, and every time that happens, it ends badly.

He's looked great in some games, and awful in others, like any young defenseman. Obviously team Murray is offering a lower number than team Cowen likes, but it's just negotiation. Even if he holds out, it's not worth getting worked up over.

It's just business.

Well, Melnyk has said there is no money to add $5,000,000 for a player...

AJ Jakubec @AJonSports
Melnyk "I can't spend another 5-6 Million dollars on a player. The revenues aren't there. The team will not be viable." #Sens

AJ Jakubec @AJonSports
Melnyk "On the one hand you have fans screaming 'why aren't you spending this?' Well guess what. We don't have the money for it." #Sens

On the other hand there is likely to be a certain amount of posturing here. However, looking deeper into the Melnyk issue (Travis Yost on Hockeybuzz did a fantastic job on this, crappy site but nice investigation) he seems to be borrowing from the Senators to pay Trimel's losses. If the Senators really can't add salary past $50,000,000 to $55,000,000 a year they'll be left behind in a hurry, especially with the cap going up and Spezza and Ryan needing big cheques in two years.

Cowen is gonna land 2.5-3.0 over a shortish period. The downside of his holding out, of course, is that he's one of the Senators' "better" defenders and it would stunt his development somewhat...

Anyways, this whole money issue could be solved by August 26, that's when Ottawa City Council decides on whether it gives the casino to Rideau Carleton Raceway or if Melnyk can set up a casino next to Canadian Tire Centre. If Melnyk gets his cash shack they can blow the bank year in and year out.

Honestly, you read more stuff on the Senators than I do.

I think you read, listen to, and talk more about the Sens than the Leafs for that matter.

So you expect the Leafs to have the second best offense in the league?

Only Pittsburgh scored more goals last year (if you factor their pace for 82 games ... 277 goals).

You have the Leafs putting up 265.

I'm guessing he doesn't think the Leafs will stay perfectly healthy.

but hey, they were what, the 5th highest scoring team in hockey last year? not a stretch to see them score lots of goals again.
