The New Division

I think it's more that the assists are too high. You have something like 1.9 assists per goal, whereas regularly it would be much lower (Habs were 1.78 last year, Leafs were 1.69). You rarely see guys like McClement, Colborne, Bolland put up that high assist numbers, and you also rarely see 6 D get 20+ assists each, either. A guy like Brennan won't put up 20 points if he's just the #6 guy.

Seems like a weird thing to say about a guy in his situation, no?

Leafs' goals paces over last 2 years:

Kessel 36
Lupul 36
Clarkson 29

Kadri 27
JVR 26
Bozak 21

Bolland 19
McClement 12
Kulemin 10

Colborne 6
McLaren 6
Orr 4

Phaneuf 13
Liles 8

Gardiner 7
Franson 7

Gunnar 4
Ranger ?

Total 271 + Ranger

I just took a quick look at PTBNL's numbers and to me it looks like most of these players have already played at these paces for extended stretches before so it doesn't look too absurd to me

I mean, what's wrong with his McClement assist prediction? He had 9 in half a season last year and PTBNL has him at 15.

Depends a lot on their roles. If he's playing 4th line minutes, it's rare to see a guy put up 20+ points. If he sticks on the 3rd line, like he did last year, then it's not so far off the mark.

12/13, Leafs assists per game: 5.19
Prediction on Leafs assists per game: 5.91

Maybe a little high. Subtract 3 assists from each player and you get 5.2.

I just rounded the numbers either up or down to keep it simple.

Some of you guys are picky. Considering all of players predictions were round numbers I don't think he was going for 1.69 vs 1.9 assist per goal type of precision.

Nothing unreasonable there other than Kessel's production might be too low.

McClement played 4th line minutes at ES. He was only shifted up in the lineup when there were injuries, or in late game situations when defending a lead. Otherwise, he played 4th line ES minutes and top PK minutes.

And you could easily flip Gardiner and Franson's production. If Franson continues to see #1 PP minutes, while Gardiner doesn 't, it will be tough for Gardiner to overtake either Phaneuf and Franson offensively.

But I think Gardiner will be too good this year to ignore and Randy will be forced to expand his role at some point.

So you expect the Leafs to have the second best offense in the league?

Only Pittsburgh scored more goals last year (if you factor their pace for 82 games ... 277 goals).
.

I don't think they'll top the Penguins, but they were 6th in the short season with Lupul missing 2/3 of the year and Gardiner only playing 12 games.

I'm feeling some deja-vu here. Is it just me or does this conversation happen every offseason? The Leafs have had a good offence for 2 years now and have been improving steadily. Here is how the Leafs ranked in GF the last 5 years.

12/13: 6th
11/12: 10th
10/11: 21st
09/10: 25th
08/09: 10th

So since that horrible 09/10 they have improved every year offensively as their young players have developed. If the Leafs have a relatively healthy season, a top 5 finish in offence shouldn't be out of the question.

Daniel Alfredsson confirms what had been suspected -- things went sideways in Ottawa over contract talks.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Alfredsson clearly believed there was some kind of verbal agreement to extend him after playing for $1M last season.

Melnyk and Murray have both previously stated that they gave Alfie and his agent the "blank cheque" treatment.

If Alfie feels he was slighted then he's too sensitive.
