The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

“That’s my style of hockey.” What is?? Aside from saying dig in and play better, I have never heard this guy say one substantive thing in any of his statements.

And now the players are shit, eh? And you need to say that publicly too? I hope the league has fully figured out the fraud that this goon is and never gives him another job so he can slink into obscurity forever.

Listen I'm not saying they're doomed or that Metcalf was some brilliant mind..but this in conjunction with the July 1st debacle and Chayka not even mentioning his r&d team or Metcalf in his presser (even Tre mentioned them and thanked them, without fail; Chayka mentioned hardy and brackett tho) is creating some skepticism within me that I didn't have much of before July 1st. And I think that's fair.

No final determinations made, but there's reason for skepticism. No need to just go along with whatever the leafs do and say it's all fine and there are zero red flags. Of course there have been red flags this month.

If they poach Dellow or some shit by paying him a bag to be AGM with the leafs then all is forgiven.

hoping so hard that this media rehab tour gets him another gig.

That’s in large part what his praise of Mitch as an incredible leader was all about too.

Just pumping the tires of the guy that left as an excuse for why his team had such a catastrophic fall-off in his second year as coach.

I just don’t see how you can be so focused on depth spending and ignore adding two of the biggest analytics darlings moved this summer (Raddysh and Andrae) and drafting the right guy at 1.

Not to mention Chaykas front office rework so far has been promising, adding a nerd coach and bringing in one of the most respected draft guys. Not to mention identifying Hardy as a key piece (who is also an analytics guy) of the front office moving forward.

Lots of green flags too.

When we assume didn’t listen to, how do we know that the analytics guys weren’t bad at what they did and focused on bad or pointless data and that they were listened to?

Metcalf has a good reputation in the analytics industry, and they were pioneers on data strategies that have held up well over the last bunch of years. Basically, their early ideas turned out to be good ideas that have been robust and are still major pillars of hockey analytics.

I mean…if you do an absolutely amazing job remodelling your bathroom, but then you light your kitchen on fire and burn it to the ground, it’s only natural that people are going to focus on the latter.

1. I'm focused on depth spending because he blew $25m of cap space on trash.

2. The green flags are the reason I'm skeptical and not debuting my version of zeke's "we're so fucked" signature. I've seen green flags, I've seen red flags. Jury's still out.

I think the core issue for some of us is how crazy out of step his July 1 work looks vs the rest of the moves. We kind of know that the team had been hoping for Raddysh long before Chayka got here. Credit to John for getting it done of course, but still. Similarly, do we know if Andrae was a Chayka guy or a suggestion from our analytics team?

Pretty sure McKenna/Raddysh are the kitchen and Sissons is the backyard shed.

Most of the more expensive bottom 6 was acquired pre sunny. And Rodrigues was mostly a cap dump from trading the big money goalie.

Whereas Chayka acquired a brand new bottom 6 all in a single day.

It's true - but tbf paying $5m for 2 fungible bottom 6ers isn't radically better than $6m for a fungible goalie. But yeah it is somewhat better.

Chaykes said something like he’d been watching him for years after the trade.

Rodrigues has just 1 year left, Markstrom 2. If they're shit again this year they can get some assets for him at the deadline.

Boqvist makes just 1.5, that's fine. But yeah his contract also expires.

Year 1 it may not be vastly better, but they'll have more optionality with those expiring contracts for depth guys vs a shit goalie contract for 2 years.

Because even my mom with her Hockey News subscription would have drafted Gavin and signed Raddysh.

Aren’t they still paying this weasel? Why are they letting him do this?
