The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

Its a self perpetuating cycle between Marner, his Dad, his agent, and the Toronto media.

All four parties have an axe to grind with the Leafs. Marner needs his validation, Paul needs to be relevant, Ferris needs his publicity, and the media needs their clicks. Not to mention every other NHL fanbase and idiot ex-NHL podcasters that eat this shit up. A perfect storm in a quiet summer.
If he needs the attention, maybe Marner shouldn’t have asked to be moved to a market that stops caring about hockey when the season ends.

Why does Marner need attention from the media in a city that he asked to be traded from a year ago?

I honestly think it’s because he genuinely has a desperate, all-consuming desire to be liked.

And even now, he wants Leaf fans to not see him as the “bad guy” for leaving. On top of that, he wants us to still love him, and for the popular opinion in Toronto to be that Mitch was right to leave, and that we and the organization treated him badly and are sorry for it.

And because he’s also incredibly dumb on top of being delusional, he thinks the comments he makes to the media or the comments he has people like Ferris make on his behalf are somehow going to help accomplish that goal.

Well, he's not the first star player to ask for a trade from the Leafs. Sittser, Gilmour, and Mahovlich all asked for trades and made it up to the fans.

The bonus isn't about the money. It's that they were told no, and Auston was told yes.

It's always about them having a vision of what Marners career here was supposed to be, and Auston getting in the way of it.
Yup. That whole comment about how they didn't make good later - of course they did, they gave him $11M long term.

And as pointed out earlier, he wouldn't have collected almost any of the bonus anyway.

So how didn't they make good later? By failing to deprive the bonuses to Matty later.

Bonuses that Marner wouldn't have been paid on. What a piece of shit.
