Calgary 3 points in final 2 games.
Leafs 0 points in final 1 game (or even 1 point if Calgary wins both)
= 4th last and 80% chance of keeping pick

If leafs win then root for Seattle to get 1 point in final 2 games.
If leafs lose or get 1 point then they clinch 5th last no matter what
=42% chance of keeping pick

And the more I think about it, the more I think this Noah Chadwick dude might be good and an important piece of this teams future d corps. That's a pretty impressive season for a 6'4 20 year old. He had 2 points in his first 14 games and then 20 in his last 52, which is a 30 point pace without much PP time. And 16 points in his final 32 (41 point pace). And the few people who track AHL nerdies tend to rate him pretty damn highly.

Ended up on the top pair playing over 20 min per game on a decent team. Iffy skating apparently, which is gonna be the biggest risk, but overall that is one of the better seasons we've seen from a 20 year old Leaf D on the Marlies.

They desperately need one of these random young d to be a thing. Scam Gungford, Chadwick, that Johansson guy.. 1 or 2 of them would be nice.

I can live with that. He probably has the highest floor of the top 5. He could be a top pairing defender on his defensive and transition skills alone even if the offence doesn't play up, no QB1 upside, etc.

Imagine thinking it surprising or noteworthy that a team, here in the year 2026, isn’t bothering to consider luminaries like Doug Armstrong, Dean Lombardi, Ron Francis or Peter fucking Chiarelli for their GM/President vacancy.

Keep those fossils and failures far away from us, please.

Cautiously optimistic

i really don't believe in either of them tbh.

Beggars can't be choosers. Any similar defender is probably outside of our ability to trade for right now without giving up picks we don't have, Knies or Cowan. What we do have is cap space and flexibility. If we can get a Raddysh or Andersson for "free", do it. I mean, the blueline you posted above is bad, potentially horrific.

Tanev is busted. This is worse than when Muzzin was clearly dead and you kept pencilling him in as our heavy usage shutdown guy. He turns 37 shortly after the start of next season. If he can play at all anymore, it's not in the heavies. Not without dying.

Carels is 18 and it's super fucking rare for an 18 yr old defender to crack a NHL lineup, nevermind be good. The list over the last ~20 yrs is Ekblad, Dahlin, Schaefer, or put another way, all #1's who were consensus #1 picks. Love me some Carels propaganda, but we're into baghdad bob territory here.

Dernferd might be good enough to make the jump to a depth role, but he's not jumping into a top 4 role on a NHL team unless that NHL team is intent on tanking.

and Rielly...my love for the man is well documented, but is he even a good top 4 defender anymore? I'm willing to give him a Berube mulligan because jesus christ is that guy bad, but he just turned 32 and that's usually damn close to the inflection point on a puck moving defender's downswing.

There is a guy who has scored a ppg clip this year while playing 23+ minutes a night for a 100+ elite nerdies team. Don't over think it.

Tough call for Rielly, given where the team is now and likely will be the next few seasons I don't think a Berube mulligan is unreasonable...
