The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

an article comes out right before we’re hiring a new pres and GM basically saying ownership in one of the most pressure packed spots in the league is… cheap and dumb and meddlesome. perfecttttt.

I just think the job would be a lot more appealing to the best nerd candidates if you thought the Leafs would back up your data with their bottomless resources/financial might. Not like… cancelling dad trips and shit

Make the right hire, get out of his way and let him cook, and all is forgiven.

Unfortunately my fear is that when Pelley says "data driven GM" he means "ask grok how to improve the roster."

But I guess that doesn't matter if they hire a Mehta type and give him autonomy. I beleaf

you're goddamn right. asking grok how to improve the roster is the worst idea of all time. Give the new guy full autonomy to ask claude how to improve the roster like any self-respecting data driven GM

Our media has a love affair with protecting the front office members who leaked them info. If a GM who did a poor job gets a shine job in the media within a few weeks after their firing, with blame placed elsewhere other than on them, be skeptical.

I mean....tbh i just can't buy that they cancelled any of that kind of thing for financial reasons.

just doesn't make sense.

i can imagine a bunch of other stupid reasons why treliving/berube would cancel shit like that tho, but sensible reasons - based on their stupidity and approach.

It is very important to remember that all information provided in that article came from Treliving's camp. Much of it is likely valid, but not everything. And much of it likely exaggerated.

And also despite being a baby back bitch and leaking this shit after he was canned, Treliving will be hired as GM by another NHL team within the next 12-18 months.

Reporting is they they’re penny pinching tho.

but i could buy that they might have been trying a harder tougher anti-country club type of atmosphere - something that treliving and berube would have been very supportive of and probably leading on.

The article said Pelley denied that cancelling the trip came from him.

Also they ended up doing it later in the year.

The budget cuts are bad though.

I think the Shanahan and Masai decisions are just regular job inflation things. Presidents don't always get replaced, usually the GM moves up in responsibility and the AGMs follow. And then eventually the GM becomes President and an AGM becomes GM. That kind of thing. And when it becomes clearer that the GM is doing the bulk of the work while the president is becoming more of a figurehead, then it gets harder to justify that president's salary. Especially when the team isn't improving.

I have no doubt that both the leafs and raps will have presidents soon - thank god treliving didn't get to graduate into that job (sure sounded possible coming into the year), though on the raps side Bobby may (though raps might do a housecleaning too).

The sports science thing came up earlier in the year and i doubt it was costs related.

The stuff about player perks - especially absolutely irrelevant things like 50% to 30% discounts - absolutely seems more of a discipline type thing than a costs thing.

I don’t see why one of the richest teams in the league would nickel and dime players families buying tickets and that doesn’t really seem like something the GM and coach would be in charge of? I feel like they’ve provided enough examples in this article that there’s something directed higher than that.

Pelley definitely seems like an issue.

That all tracks with corporate logic imo. There's no lead executive to argue for, and then manage the internal team budget to include all of those things, so Pelley is managing it the way he would. Part of a new lead hockey executives job (whether GM or POHO) would be to produce a budget and argue for it if necessary. If Gillis or whoever wanted all of those things back, they would be back and he would be assessed on performance vs expenditure as part of his annual assessment.

Pelley wouldn't have picked those things randomly, he would have been given a budget target and then given the latitude to get to it. Those were just the things he chose.

Something to keep in mind as well is that Rogers wants to spin MLSE off as it's own publicly traded entity. So saving even a small amount of money now (say 20-30 million) pre IPO is worth 300-450 million in market cap if the stock trades at a ~15-1 multiple.
