The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

That all tracks with corporate logic imo. There's no lead executive to argue for, and then manage the internal team budget to include all of those things, so Pelley is managing it the way he would. Part of a new lead hockey executives job (whether GM or POHO) would be to produce a budget and argue for it if necessary. If Gillis or whoever wanted all of those things back, they would be back and he would be assessed on performance vs expenditure as part of his annual assessment.

Pelley wouldn't have picked those things randomly, he would have been given a budget target and then given the latitude to get to it. Those were just the things he chose.

Something to keep in mind as well is that Rogers wants to spin MLSE off as it's own publicly traded entity. So saving even a small amount of money now (say 20-30 million) pre IPO is worth 300-450 million in market cap if the stock trades at a ~15-1 multiple.

It’s like Rogers decided to allocate some Leaf money to the Jays portfolio

Penny pinching on every expense and whoring out shamelessly for extra revenue in every possible gross way.

Yeah, pretty much about what I expected from Rogers ownership.

The people hoping that this organization would show up to Sunny Mehta’s house with a dump truck full of money might want to revise their expectations. They’ll probably offer him the same salary he’s making now with Florida, but as a sweetener they’ll give him 30% off* his bill if he bundles his home phone, wireless and cable packages with Rogers.

*Limited time offer only. Offer expires after six months, after which services will renew on a three-year term at standard rates +30%. $350 activation fee applies.

I think Pelley and his bosses realize how important this hire is. There is real potential to kill the golden goose if they fuck this up. This isn't the same market with infinite love and patience for the Leafs that it was 30-40 years ago. Even waffle gate existed before the mass popularization of social media. This will stop being a cash cow very quickly if they're a rudderless shit show for very long in this media environment.

I know you deal with your bosses to some extent in every position but I dunno if I’m one of the more coveted nerds, I’d be a little leery of Pelley and Teherany if they have their own AI/data ideas.

And when Dubas was here it was reported he was given a lot of agency in expanding scouting and analytics staff, so I’d want to be assured I’d have the same perks.

I have no doubt the Leafs will make great offers (money/control) to the executives they want

If you already thought Mehta would prefer the situation in New Jersey, I don’t think the perception there’s dysfunction and meddling from above here helps, that’s all.

I agree with that… and while my guess is that Sunny and NJ is the fit, there are plenty of great nerd candidates out there even if Sunny turns down a lucrative offer from Toronto

Serious question though...why would rogers be worse than venture capital guys in New Jersey for budget, meddling, etc?

I'm open to the idea of Rogers being shit. But most of these corporate owners are shit.

I acknowledged the idea that there’s some meddling from above in most orgs in my post but your CEO bringing in AI generated trade proposals to deadline discussions and sending out details of your trade talks in a newsletter called Pelley’s Page seems truly bizarre to me?

Because a guy who openly admits that he's clueless about hockey operations saw how bad hockey operations was being managed and tried to get involved in shit that he openly admits he hasn't the faintest fuck clue about.

This is more of an indictment of Treliving than Pelley imo. That Pelley felt it was necessary to do whatever he was capable of to be involved in a department he knows nothing about because of how badly he lost trust in the competence of the guys running it that he inherited. Chatgpt probably has better hockey operations ideas than Pelley.

Yeah, it's bizarre. But so is the level of incompetence Treliving showed in the job. Pelley should have never been in the position where he felt the need to get involved so directly.

His response to all of this in his presser was to admit that this was fucked up and that big changes were going to be made.

When did Pelley lose trust, exactly? Tre didn’t make many moves after last year

It does seem like very specifically a leafs thing and a this year thing. He wasn't involved at the deadline last year with Shanahan around or with the raptors at all in any capacity.

Look, you’ll get absolutely no argument at all from me that Treliving was a total moron but Pelley still comes off looking pretty terrible here. The response when you think your GM sucks can’t be to wait til the deadline and bring in AI trade proposals to your dumbass GM.

Yep they ( mlse bosses) cant take the Toronto market for granted anymore. The city has changed so much over the last 30-40 years. Look around you. Its not your grandpa’s Toronto anymore. If you know, you understand.

In case Pelley hasn't noticed, the Jays joined the MLB 50 years ago and Raptors joined the NBA 31 years ago and the demographic, corporate, media landscape of Toronto sports has changed completely in that half-century. Back in the 1960-1970s, before the Jays came to town, the market was dominated by the Leafs and the Argos. When the MLB and the NBA Came here, the argos slowly but surely became irrevelant on the Toronto sports scene while the Leafs still remained popular because hockey has deep Roots and history here, hockey is our national sport of choice and the Leafs brand is so strong. The buds could survive until now but if they continue to such in the new and modern media landscape ( social media, streaming, etc ) they will drop in popularity and revelance amont the younger generations. You cant capture them the same way you could capture Older fans because older fans didnt have smartphones, social media and internet back then. They could only Rely on radio, TV and real life entertainment (bars, nightclubs, parks ) to have fun unlike now. And unlike now, you couldnt avoid real life. You had to real with it. Now you can stay inside your home all Day and live your entire Life online and only interactions with other people online, chronically online people Exist now- Thanks to smartphones, high speed accessible cheap internet and social media. Many people are literally escapists right now .

And there are so much entertainment options, distractions, social media applications, new technologies, unlimited access to porn (lol) etc. People get overwhelmed with all of these things and cant make a choice. Then people work and study hard, take care of their health , their families etc people live their life and have no Time for other people or other stuff. Constant Access to smartphones and social media significantly reduced the patience, critical ability, logical thinking, dopamine levels, and attention span of people. People struggle to really focus on things and subjects for a long term period of time, they can’t even read books the old fashioned way. If its not brainrot, trolling, ragebait, controversial content, they will not be interested.

In This Attention economy, Everyone is desperately trying to get heard and seen, become famous and rich. But they often get lost in the noise, the internet and social media fragmented monoculture for ever. There will never be artists/sports teams/shared moments that bring an entire generation together anymore. Today, There are too much entertainment options, artists, songs, professional sports Leagues, movies, netflix shows, streamers, influencers, and distractions at people’s disposal to force them to focus on other things/people right now.

Silent generation, Boomers, gen X and Older millenials especially from outer suburbs of the GTA and semi-rural/rural areas are the ones who continue to follow the Leafs , right or Wrong, win or lose. Younger millenials, Gen z, Gen alpha etc especially from the urban areas of the GTA dont have the same unconditional loyalty and emotional attachment to the Leafs as Older people do. At least Older generations has unforgettable playoff moments ( 1960s Cups, sittler/ McDonald’s/salming, gilmour/ Clark , sundin/ cujo/roberts/kaberle etc ) What the Young folks have: only 2 first round series wins in 22 years lol.

Anyways, pick a nerd and let them cook. and if ever get to the point where you’re sure AI > your GM, don’t let them run your trade deadline maybe pls?

Pelley was asleep at the wheel this season, no arguments. I don't think he decided to start assessing Treliving and hockey ops until the deadline.

That we made it this far into the season before he discovered how fucking inept Treliving was at his job is a way more severe indictment of Pelley than his response to the ineptitude being to fire up Chatgpt in a panic trying to figure out how to avoid a fucking disaster.
