Let’s be honest, ownership meddling and penny pinching was not any part of the Leafs downfall this year. It was piss poor hockey management for 5 or so years.

The only thing you can really put on Pelley and ownership is that they were way too comfortable with the status quo when cleaning house should have been move #1.

That's why I don't really buy the need for a complete rebuild and sucking dick for a decade. Any competent, forward thinking management can turn a team competitive in a couple years in a league with this many dumb organizations.

Zito and Mehta needed 24 months to go from failed rebuild to elite contender. They didn't do anything crazy genius either, just identified players that dumb organizations under valued and picked them up.

Sam Bennett didn't immediately get better in Florida. He went from 13 minutes a night in Calgary where they insisted on treating him like a depth checking forward, to 18 minutes a night with PP time in Florida. He didn't get better, he just got a better opportunity. He went from a 1.6 P/60 guy in Calgary playing with checkers to a 1.8-1.9 P/60 guy playing with skilled players. That was the genius of Zito & Mehta. Find players getting dicked over by stupid organizations and give them a real opportunity.

I’m not under estimating the league’s dumbness but I overestimated Tre’s ability to Cosplay as a functioning GM
 
Yeah he just throws out a bunch of names. He was big on Armstrong being of interest too initially. Him and Seravelli (who said there was an 80% chance the leafs hire Armstrong) don't know much.
 
That one could possibly be true and I don't hate it. Interviewing all of florida's agms seems prudent tbh. Should be clear in the end after speaking to each who the star is, but I don't hate doing their homework there.
