One thing we're going to need for sure now is a true shut down "Checking Line" to go up against the other team's best scoring line. If (Big IF) a true "Checking Line" does emerge from Jordan's injury, then that free's J.Staal from this responsibility when he returns and he can work toward being more productive offensively and would give us 3 solid lines to roll.

I remember watching Mario Lemieux play and he never seemed to get himself tangled up in a play which might, even remotely, expose himself to getting injured. Isn't that what you want in your "Star" players? Just go out and make good plays and don't take unnecessary risks. Was this check into the boards viscious enough to break a leg? I assume there was no penalty on the play.

A video of the incident is online, and Jordan was 100% at fault. There was a minor collision, then Jordan tried to grab Georges and throw him to the ground like a "tae kwon do" take down, and ended up hurting himself. It was a stupid idea.

*It's not being called an ankle bone, that was broken. Add a few weeks to that timeline if so.

Here's the boneheaded play:

Thanks, BK. That's kinda what I thought. I might understand doing this with something "on the line", but pre-season? Way more than dumb.

They depth on this team is so depressing right now that this thread is filled with high hopes for Boychuk. I am rooting for the guy but he is also the same guy that was on the waiver wire multiple times a couple years ago and went through 3 NHL teams in the process. He also got a decent look ~6-7 games skating with Malkin in Pittsburgh and couldn't score. There is a good chance he is just a step to slow in all phases of his game to score at the NHL level. He wouldn't be the first guy to be missing the NHL touch yet can score at AHL level.

The 3rd/4th lines WITH Jordan Staal healthy were questionable. Now they are just downright pathetic. Eric Staal and Semin must have monster years and the goaltending must excel to keep this team out of the NHL basement. It is going to be a rocky year.

Wow, after watching that video you wonder if the hockey gods have it out for us this year. Of course the Rangers and their fans are probably wondering the same thing with that Derek Stepan injury that happened today (see misc thread).

Also based on that video, it doubt it's a break near the ankle. It looks like the torque point was further up the leg, which is what passes for good around here.

I wonder if Connor McDavid is starting to softly hum the James Taylor hit..."In My Mind I'm Going To Carolina"???

Anyone seen Lindholm yet this year? I've heard that he has gotten 'bigger'. Not that he is going to start throwing his weight around but when we drafted him he was noted as having good 2 way instincts and skills. Hopefully he has had a chance to put some muscle on that frame.

Just for laughs since its a little more than 2 weeks away from the season starting and who knows what additional horrors may befall us during pre-season:

Skinner-E.Staal-Boychuk
Tlusty-Lindholm-Semin
Gerbe-Nash-Di Giusseppe
Malone-McClement-Dwyer

If Rask somehow earns the spot put Lindholm back on line 1 with Eric and drop Boychuk to line 3 and remove Di Giusseppe. If not, then any other kid other than Di Giusseppe has a shot at that winger roster spot. That's not pretty, but that might be what we are faced with.

saw this on the canes page -
Peters mentioned before the season that he wanted to give Elias Lindholm a look at center, and now is as good a time as any. He will center Jeff Skinner and Jiri Tlusty on the team’s first line tonight.

Skinner-Lindholm-Tlusty
Gerbe-Rask-Boychuk
Malone-McClement-Brown
McGinn-Holmstrom-Di Giuseppe

Sekera-Faulk
Harrison-Murphy
Hainsey-Bellemore

MacIntyre
Khudobin

Sometimes you just have to laugh. The following comment appeared on Deadspin's article on Jordan's injury (http://deadspin.com/jordan-staal-breaks-leg-in-exhibition-game-1638443515)...

While there's still a lot of crap to wade through, I've found the comments on the Gawker family of websites (Deadspin, IO9, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, etc) to be reliably funny and sometimes even informative. Unlike say ... Facebook or YouTube comments which are frankly terrifying. Oh, skip the comments on Gawker's Jezebel site though ... that sites focus in gender issues yields the predictable Neanderthal nonsense you'd expect from anything on the internet with a feminist perspective.

Back to hockey ... like I said yesterday, I expect either Lindholm or Skinner will pick up the early assignment to fill in for J Staal at center. How well that will work remains to be seen, but unless it's a complete crap-fest I seriously doubt Francis will go out of the organization for such a short term solution. Especially since he's got so many other big picture issues to be working on over the course of the season. If you're a Cup contender, you make a move to replace an injured player for a couple of months. If you're rebuilding, not so much.

Wow, you should just try reddit...all the good stuff filters its way there and the comments are in a league of their own.

So good on MacIntyre for playing well in goal last night. It will be intesting to see how Altshuller does in Charlotte and how hard he make Jeff Daniels decisions on number of starts. Charlotte SHOULD be a pretty good team this year.

But in the main event its still Khudobin +.5 and Ward -.5....a solid 1 game lead for Anton. With 4 more preseason games I expect each of them to start and play 2 more full games. Ward has ground to make up.

Really like MacIntyre's attacking style of defending the goal and his tracking of the puck.

I thought Khudobin was in goal when I first grabbed the feed until I saw the jersey number.

He was that good.

Don't expect Altshuller to be in Charlotte, unless Cam or Khudobin get hurt.

They have MacIntyre and Muse on two way or AHL deals.

It will be interesting to see who ends up in Charlotte to provide scoring....if they get some scorers, they could be good...defense will be young as well
