OT: American Politics

Unknown to the public at the time, top Trump administration officials, almost as soon as they took office, tasked State Department staffers with developing proposals for the lifting of economic sanctions, the return of diplomatic compounds and other steps to relieve tensions with Moscow.

These efforts to relax or remove punitive measures imposed by President Obama in retaliation for Russia’s intervention in Ukraine and meddling in the 2016 election alarmed some State Department officials, who immediately began lobbying congressional leaders to quickly pass legislation to block the move, the sources said.

“There was serious consideration by the White House to unilaterally rescind the sanctions,” said Dan Fried, a veteran State Department official who served as chief U.S. coordinator for sanctions policy until he retired in late February. He said in the first few weeks of the administration, he received several “panicky” calls from U.S. government officials who told him they had been directed to develop a sanctions-lifting package and imploring him, “Please, my God, can’t you stop this?”

BTW, I never believed that bullshit Barron Trump story about seeing Griffin's picture and thinking it was his dad.

Ted Nugent was recently an honored white house guest.

In 2012 he said something to the effect of, "We should all go to Washington and chop Obama, Biden, and HRC's heads off if he wins the election"

Wonder if Trump even asked if that effected their kids?

@michelleisawolf

Congressman: god will take care of climate change.

God: bitch I sent you scientists.

Good for them, but if/when their States begin to lag behind others I think you'll see a change in course.

California is carrying the US economically, and has been for some time. This idea that investing in green energy and combatting climate change are economic killers is starting to look false

At the same time, we've seen a number of states enact financial and climate policies in tune with the Republican vision for the country, and it has promptly turned them into basket cases.

I read that there are 10x more Americans working in wind / solar than coal???

That's hats so stupid about his anti enviro stance. that's where the growth is.

It's not even an economic argument for them. They simply refuse to believe that it exists. The rest of the world has been fooled or is in on the conspiracy and only Donnie and the Republicans know the real truth.

Bob Iger from Disney has also resigned from Agent Orange's advisory council, also because of the removal of the US from the Paris deal.

This is largely about shitting on Obama and rousing his idiot base.

Anything about economics or anything policy related is justed muddied and the topic is switched. They don't care.

That said, the US private sector and state/municipal governments will carry on and will play a leading role in the decarbonization of economic activity. "States rights" is now the battle cry of progessive states against putrid ass0lery in DC.

I'm confused. Would it have been preferable to remain in this non-binding unenforceable accord and simply not comply? I ask because that's precisely what most of the countries that entered the accord will do. Self imposed reductions?

You don't get almost every country to agree to an accord that has any teeth. This was basically a symbolic accord and people are having a coronary?

Funny thing is people were saying the same crap when Bush pulled out of the Kyoto Accord.

The accord is a joke and people freaking out over it are shaking their fist at the sky. Put together an accord that actually has teeth and maybe I'll care because this particular one isn't it.

US ratification and good faith was crucial to get China and India to sign. That was a necessary first step before measure with teeth could be developed and put into place. Let's be clear, this was also a sacrifice by China and India. They would be the biggest sources of GHGs in the future, but they clearly recognize they will not benefit from the energy technology that made the west rich and powerful - they will have to decarbonize. And now the U.S, which grew super rich and powerful while contributing 31% of accumulated GHGs (far more than anyone else) is now gonna leave the large medium-rich and poor countries, who desperately need economic growth, with the responsibility to clean up their mess and the burden of switching over.

This is a rare black mark on the United States, it wasn't a "mistake" - it was willful. And it's entirely due to Trump and assh0le Bannon.

Re: OT: Canadian Politics

Did you think I was being serious with that suit comment?

As much as I think that Trudeai was buoyed by good smile and a head of hair - I do know that the Harper Conservatives had largely reached their best before date.
It wasn't an uninsightful comment. In today's campaigns who looks and dresses best do have advantages.

Trump may unwittingly have given climate action politics a boost. Industry, government and forward looking citizens will rally hard. Technology is already there.
