And I'm fairly sure that his time at Notre Dame is Phillips' only (tenuous) connection to the ACC. For me, this is pretty much the dream hire for ACC Commissioner ... respected industry veteran with almost no ties or alliances within the traditional ACC power structure. After decade upon decade of the whispered nonsense that flows naturally from elevating one of your member ADs to the Commissioner's post, an outside hire is an absolute breath of fresh air. And for my money, it was mandatory.

including Swofford every ACC commish had a tie to one or more ACC school. Either as AD or alum. I guess with this new guy the red tin hat folks will have to find someone else to blame for all their losses. The Pope, Queen Liz, Trialteral Commission, Council on Foreign Relations? :) A few weeks ago the Queen wore a light blue coat!!

Joe Gilglio has his latest yellow pad bowl projections out. There are differences depending on who wins the ACC championship game, and it assumes that a Clemson win will still see Notre Dame in the playoffs. If Notre Dame wins, he has State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl (formerly the Belk Bowl). If Clemson wins, he has them in the Gator. Carolina would also be impacted, with them going to the Orange Bowl if Clemson wins but the Cheez-It Bowl in Orlando if Notre Dame wins.

 
That tracks with everything else I've seen in terms of projections, with one exception. Joe's got Wake in the Mayo if Clemson wins when virtually everybody else has Va Tech in that bowl regardless of who wins the Championship game.
 
at least mayo is something you can eat like sugar or orange or a plant like rose and cotton. Much better than the camshaft bowl or whatever they call the Tampa, Orlando, etc bowls now.

They are all now and have always been all named by their sponsors, so who gives a crap whether or not the name is an organic product?
 
pretty sure there were no corporate bowl sponsor names until 80s. I only found out recently ND did not go to bowl games until 1970 except for 1 in 1925.. That was their policy and they stuck with it 45 years. They had plenty of money and still do. Even more interesting is they never have had a booster club except for a few years.

Turns out Indians won't change name until 2022
 
Moderna Vax approved this week . FDA said they hope jeffbear is happy now. :) These vaccines don't contain the virus so the only that can happen is mild side effects.

city council voting on downtown south including 20k stadium for non existing MLS team At this point I think moving a team is the only hope. Any teams having money problems?

The College Football Playoff Committee may move one semifinal from the Rose Bowl. Under California’s current restrictions, not even family members would be able to attend the game. The most likely destination is Jerry World in Texas. The game would not be called the Rose Bowl, the name is co-owned by the City of Pasadena.

A decision is expected by Thursday.
 
Rose parade already cancelled. Why not move game to Durham again? :) Way back for a few years they had chariot races instead of the FB game.

they can say it's the Bowl normally called Rose. Or like Prince use a symbol

Pretty much every team is having pandemic related money problems, but in general ... no. MLS has jacked up expansion fees enough that the recent round of expansions has everybody pretty well situated. However, the ownership groups in both Utah and Houston are under fire at the moment. It appears that Salt Lake will resolve itself with a local ownership change, and Houston seems to be committed to a re-brand so I think those storms will pass. I continue to maintain that there is almost no chance that Steve Malik will get his hands on an MLS franchise now that the league is fully committed to the expansion franchise in Charlotte ... barring a failure of that franchise, which seems unlikely given their financial backing. When they chose to go to Charlotte that made the Raleigh market redundant to MLS. Spending ANY public funds on this on the back of some wild hopes of getting an MLS tenant would be beyond stupid.

Agree. The stadium is a white elephant. If you remove the stadium, this is Kane’s North Hills project in a new location. He built that without public funds; without a stadium, this doesn’t even qualify. If there are infrastructure improvements required on roads, that’s different, but for anything enclosed within the property boundaries that he owns, that’s a big, fat no.
 
So people are OK with all the tax money for PNC? I know Karmanos spent some money but less than 50%. And now Dundon is getting a bunch of hotel/meal taxes for updates .

It won't happen barring a miracle but a few MLB teams need new stadiums such as Oakland and Tampa. Giants almost moved to Tampa before they got their new park.

One thing about North Hills is those big towers are about 1/3 parking decks because we have no good mass transit. I know because I worked in one.

Yes. From the Wake County site: “The revenue supports arts, culture, sports and convention facilities in Wake County.” Without a stadium, Downtown South fits none of those criteria. They’ve tried to pitch the stadium as an alternate concert venue, but IMO it will only cannibalize Walnut Creek. And it would be too big to host the acts that are booked at Red Hat, Koka Booth or the Art Museum.
 
If you look around the country a very large percent of new stadiums/arenas attract a pro major league team. Not 100% but it's high number. As far as I know there is no more hotel/food tax money left for them to get unless the tax is raised so it's a moot point. It's not going to be raised any time soon with a bad economy

Old timers like me remember when Jim Goodman bought the bulls and Durham had a bond for a new stadium but it failed. He then talked about a new RTP area stadium. All of a sudden Durham was scared to lose the Bulls so they built a stadium even after voters said no. And it opened a year late. they stayed in the old stadium (which is really crap) for another year after the "farewell year."
 
There's a school of thought that holds that all public funds dedicated to sports venues is ultimately wasted if you don't believe that you can monetize such things as "civic pride." Frankly, on a pure dollars and sense scale that's not really arguable. Mostly because nobody can actually produce legit date on the "economic impact" those things with a straight face. People do ... but nobody ever actually believes that nonsense. It's marketing, nothing else.

The thing about the public portion of the money that goes into the PNC that's a bit different is that it comes from a usage tax on the things that visitors to the area are most likely to spend money on ... ie, hotels and restaurants. Now, you can argue that we do harm to those businesses (taxing hotels and restaurants that don't cater to tourists and business travelers, for example) or that we're gaining local benefit on the backs of people who don't get to actually enjoy that benefit ... but at the end of the day travel and tourism don't really add that much to the local economy other than in very isolated business sectors that serve visitors directly. In other words, tourists and business travelers tend to spend money in a nearly hermetically sealed micro-economy that exists to service their needs. Yeah, it provides industry and jobs to the greater economy, but it's a pretty tenuous relationship with the rest of the community. Taxing the direct spending of tourists and visitors and directing the revenue towards something like a sports arena is a way to convert "closed cell" dollars into something that adds lasting value to the community at large ... while still generating even more tourism and visitor impact. It's an economic example of adding value with very little negative impact. And tourists and visitors don't vote locally, so it's a relatively easy political battle to win.
