2019-Whenever Misc. Grab Bag Thread

Panthers had fans build the stadium but city donated very valuable land. And they also paid for recent stadium upgrades. And now of course new owner is asking for more tax money for a new place not far from existing site. The new site had a factory on it but it's moving out of the city.

It depends on how they finance it. If it comes out of general obligation bonds, everyone in Charlotte will pay for it in the inevitable property tax increase for debt service. But by pegging tax outflows to PNC and all the other things that have been financed to revenue generated by the tourism industry, (and really we pay it too, any time we eat at a restaurant), it doesn’t affect the city or county budget.
 
England reviewed their Covid lockdown tiers and moved London back to tier 3. That means no fans in the stands there. Only Brighton, Southampton, Everton and Liverpool (for those unaware, Liverpool’s and Everton’s stadiums are on opposite sides of Stanley Park in Liverpool, less than a 1 mile walk) remain in tier 2 and can have 2,000 fans in the stadium. The tier system will be replaced by “Christmas bubbles” on December 23, which presumably means no fans for the Boxing Day matches. The tier system resumes on December 28.
 
amazing how many UK stadiums are over 100 years old. They have been upgraded but still it's not the US for sure.. Some are pre 1900 construction. The premier league no longer allows standing tickets after a game where almost 100 fans were killed . One of the Liverpool stadiums has a church in the corner so they don't play early games on Sunday. Lower level UK teams are allowed standing tickets but I don't know if any sell them. Tenn had a small dorm in their stadium until around 1985. You could not see the game from the dorm.

Lived in a dorm at State 2 years that overlooked the old Riddick Field. Some guy on the hall said one day he ran into an old man in the bathroom looking out over it reminiscing.
 
Safe standing areas ? Is that like "clean" coal plants? I remember after the Who show in 79 where people died they banned standing for big concerts. I think that ban lasted maybe 10 years.

Got my new Trane HVAC. much better than the ancient piece of crap I had. I think Abe Lincoln installed it .

Some of the new MLS stadiums have standing areas too. It can be done safely, the problems at Hillsborough had less to do with the fans and more to do with the mismanagement at the stadium. Watch the documentary, it’s maddening.
 
when Canes have standing tickets it's around 500? I assume the fire dept. had to sign off on that .

BTW when PNC first opened there was one thing that was not complete so they had to pay a fire dept. guy to be at every event. I guess it was related to alarms.

Umm ... that was a stampede. It had nothing to do with the standing area and everything to do with building security forcing everyone with unassigned seating to enter all at the same time through only a couple of sets of doors.

The modern terraces in England have safety rails and spaced rows. Some of the rails even have cup holders. It's as safe as houses.

I recall NASA "fixed" the space shuttle after one blew up on launch and then another one blew up on landing. I guess 3 of 5 surviving is not too bad. SpaceX has had 90+ rocket flights with just 1 partial failure. I guess the astronauts are glad to know that .

Fire marshal is a god. Nothing opens or expands without his OK, especially an assembly occupancy.

Watch the documentary. The inquest, which wasn’t completed until 2016 found “the then match commander, Ch Supt David Duckenfield, was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care.”
