2025-26 NHL Miscellaneous Thread

Remind me again why the Red Wings were trading away assets to get someone to take Jake Walman off of their hands? They couldn't get rid of him fast enough.
 
With all the nonsense that went on in the Tampa-Florida game, only Tampa players have received supplemental discipline, with Scott Sabourin suspended 4 games for roughing Aaron Ekblad and JJ Moser was suspended 2 games for boarding Jesper Boqvist. Carter Verhaeghe got a game misconduct for boarding and escaped supplemental discipline. Additionally, the Lightning were fined $100k and coach Jin Cooper was fined $25k. So apparently, the game was played in a vacuum? Or is it because NHL Hockey Operations czar Colin Campbell’s sone is an assistant GM for the Panthers?

From the karma catches up to you files, Ekblad has been targeting guys for years and getting away with it, Sabourin actually force fed him some of his own medicine. Ekblad loves to act like he’s a choirboy but that guy is filthy dirty.

You know who could really use a guy like Jake Walman on their blueline right now? Yeah, the team that's paying Travis Hamonic and Erik Gustaffson to attempt to play defense while completely stationary. Detroit's personnel department is basically a clown car
 
The season kicks off tonight with a triple header on ESPN. This will be shown at some point. It features 3 players who scored a goal in the in first game. It turned out to be their only goal in their only NHL game. One of the players is Brad Fast, who scored his goal for the Canes in the last game of the 2003-04 season. It was a game tying goal, in the last game they ended in a tie, the shootout started for the 2005-06 season.

One of the others featured in the video is Dean Morton. He went on to become an NHL official, working more than 1,000 games before retiring in 2022.

It was also my last game with the canes before I left for Iraq 😁
 
Vegas declared Alex Pietrangelo out for the season and playoffs, so they’ll get full cap relief for his $8.8 million cap hit.
 
We are about to see how dinged up Kochetkov might be. The problem with Husso though is he is on year 1 of a 2 year, $2.2 million AAV contract. The Canes won't want to pay that.
 
Husso might be interesting if he was on a cheaper contract but I'm thinking Carolina of all franchises should stay miles and miles away from Georgiev. IMO Georgiev needs a full season in the AHL to get his game and head in order, and/or to prove that he cares enough to work on either concern. So, 90% of the league would be claiming him just to put him on waivers again. Husso is a solid enough NHL backup right now, so long as he's playing behind a cohesive defense. I guess Mrazek beat him out in pre season though, which ain't exactly encouraging giving how Mr Azek has played the last couple of years.

What is the over/under on Necas' AAV for the next contract? Is someone going to pay him $12+ million?

Toronto really thought they they had a shot at McDavid this summer, so do they delude themselves into spending that money on little Marty? Maybe. Teams have done dumber stuff. Heck, Toronto has done dumber stuff. Chicago is absolutely desperate for legit top line talent to play with Bedard. I could see them making a big play for Necas, who is a guy who actually cares about the check more than the team and thus will actually consider a rebuilding team. There's two off the top of my head and I'm sure there will be more. I figure he gets deeply over-paid this summer, which is all he's ever wanted

His ask is probably $11 to 12 million and a good target number to guess knowing his track history. With the way these recent contracts have been trending in the rising cap world, Necas is no way taking $9 or even $9.5 any longer, even though that's probably where he needs to be.
