Eric Staal Thread

That does sound right...play with the other brother.

And, I suppose the Rangers do have to make a move to gear up for Washington (looking ahead).

It could happen.

I would tend to agree, his trade value is certainly far past it's peak! But since we have your ear Habsy, your club could use him for a late playoff push...how about Staal for Michael McCarron and a 2nd rounder???

The time and sense of that deal has expired, for Montreal anyway.

Said it somewhere else, but one of either Hayes (preferable but the bshirts aren't gonna let him go) or Lindberg and a 1st for Staal.

Just do it!!! Oscar Lindberg and a second rounder would be enough. You know Eric would have no problem waiving his NMC for Marc and Broadway...makes too much sense.

And I can see Lindberg effectively fitting in not only on the third line at center but also in the team's future plans. J. Staal becomes officially #1 center, Rask #2 (this is just on paper, otherwise, matchups baby) and Lindberg moves down.

I would squeeze for that 1st - especially if the rags make us eat Staal's contract. Nothing is for free.

I mean, never say never and all that, but .... at this point if they successfully trade Cam Ward I would be highly surprised. I mean ... apply some hockey savvy and tell me why on Earth you would trade ANY asset for the guy, much less pay him more than 10 bucks an hour?

Goalie injuries are piling up right now, and that would be the ONLY way a desperate team might bite. Otherwise you shake his hand and wish him well over the summer.

If I was a fan of another team that gave up anything for E12, I'd be upset. At this point, I'm fine with whatever happens except I don't want him back here next year on anything more than a 2 way league minimum salary. The key quote in that article was the one about him not playing up to his salary in 3 years. I think we have a better chance to make the playoffs if he's not on the roster.

And, think of this - if he was playing up to his salary this season, the whole point would be moot because we'd be pretty solidly in a playoff position.

But, I've heard several TV and radio guys blame Staal's output on him being on a crummy team with crummy linemates playing in front of crummy crowds. Lots of people still think he has "IT" in him. Don't ruin it for them!

Eric Staal on future in Carolina: "I'm not going to be crushed if a decision is made and I'm moving on."

Probably out of context -- more like "it's a business and I understand if the decision is made" -- but not the best choice of words, and probably says something about how he really feels.

Absent a better offer I would do Oscar Lindberg and a 2nd round pick for E. Staal. I wouldn't want Pavel Buchnevich and Brady Skjei (another DMan?) anyway so if those are the untouchables that's not really a concern.

At least that tells us he's already open to waiving the no-trade clause.

Oscar Lindberg is pretty valuable to the Rangers because of his 650k cap hit. The thing is at this point he is at best a 3rd line center He's not exactly a fantastic young player (he's 24) and it would be a shame if that is the best we can do, but it would be better than nothing and I don't think that would impact our playoff chances negatively if we are still holding on to that hope. I would love to do better than that.

Lindberg has only averaged 12 minutes a night this year for the Rangers, 11th on the Rangers for forwards. That about the amount of time that Jay McClement averages. Obviously Lindberg is much more productive offensively with that limited amount of ice time, so perhaps he thrives paired with Skinner and DiGuiseppe or Versteeg (until he is gone) and Lindholm.

I agree and this is what I would use as leverage in asking for the 1st along with Lindberg

If the Canes have to eat 50% or more of Staal's salary, then it either has to be a 1st with Lindberg or a 2nd with one of the two better prospects- Skeji or Buchnevich.

I think 50% is the max that can be retained, but I'm not 100% certain of that.

That is correct. You cannot retain more than 50% of a players salary/cap hit and you can only have up to 3 retained salary/cap hits at the same time (Canes are at 2 at the moment with both Ruutu and Harrison's retentions ending after this season)

Don't the canes have retained salary on Semin?

******

Found the answer - a buyout doesn't count against retained salary.
