Eric Staal Thread

TSN getting in on the discussion...

Excellent article that magnifies the difficulty of moving Eric without taking back a bad contract or eating some of the remainder of Staal's contract. Eric's remaining cash on that contract is really the most difficult part in any trade, even more so than the no movement clause.

Take a team like Minnesota as an example, trying to make the playoffs and looking to shake things up, they would need to move a bad contract out like Jason Pominville's to make a Staal trade work. Outside of some of the money that the Canes would have to eat, what is the danger of plugging a guy like Pominville into Staal's roster spot for the last 20+ games if it means getting a young asset or two back in a trade?
Minnesota would seem like a desirable destination for Eric to some degree as it's the closest team from the hometown of Thunder Bay!!!

3 more years at salaries of $6.25, $5, and $5 million is the danger with Pominville. Basically you would be getting worse than Eric Staal for those salaries for 3 more years after this one. Minny's problem is they don't have pending UFAs to dump to offset E. Staal's money.

If E12 agrees to a trade-- salary will not be a hurdle. RF has the ability to take back a bad contract (expiring) or hold onto some of Staal's salary. The overall return- pick and/or prospect is the real deal and need. If E12 goes nowhere, we'd still be on the hook for that salary. The greater issue is figuring out a way to move Cam Ward-- if that's even possible.

I mean, never say never and all that, but .... at this point if they successfully trade Cam Ward I would be highly surprised. I mean ... apply some hockey savvy and tell me why on Earth you would trade ANY asset for the guy, much less pay him more than 10 bucks an hour?

Had no idea Pominville had that much term left CMal...thanks for pointing that out. Ouch!

If I was a fan of another team that gave up anything for E12, I'd be upset. At this point, I'm fine with whatever happens except I don't want him back here next year on anything more than a 2 way league minimum salary. The key quote in that article was the one about him not playing up to his salary in 3 years. I think we have a better chance to make the playoffs if he's not on the roster.

And, think of this - if he was playing up to his salary this season, the whole point would be moot because we'd be pretty solidly in a playoff position.

Because he leads the league in save percentage and GAA in games played on Wednesdays of all goalies who've played in 16+ games. If your schedule is laden with Wednesday games and your arena has openings only on Wednesdays in the playoffs, he's money!

Before his injury, Ward was on a pretty good streak. Since December 1, Ward has 400 saves on 435 shots for a .920 Save %. For the 9 games he played in 2016, it was 229 saves on 246 shots for a .931 Save %. In both cases, as it has been all season, his numbers are better than Lack's. In his 11 games in 2016, he's 255/278 for .917 and 432/477 for .912 since December 1. Yes, he'll be 32 in a couple of weeks and he's injured again. But he was on track for his best numbers since the 2011-12 season.

there is a small chance Staal would veto the trade if he thinks the return value is not high enough. He might think if the return is only a 2nd or 3rd round pick it would be an insult to him. probably only a 5% chance of that.

I see that as a 0% chance. I don't think the return matters to him, it's whether or not he's going to a contender to try to maximize his value for next year.

Um...no. Staal won't be vetoing the terms of any trade; he'll only be potentially vetoing where he could be traded.

He doesn't have to say why he vetos the trade right? He can just say No . Don't know of any rule that says he has to give a reason. And if he did, he can just say he doesn't like the team even if that is not true.

Eric wouldn't know the details of the trade. His approval will come beforehand when he meets with Francis and his agent and supplies a list of teams that would be acceptable. Once that happens and is documented, he doesn't have a say in the process. His only choice would be to say I don't want to go anywhere. The terms of any trade involving Eric aren't his concern or legal option as his power resides in choosing the teams (if any) he would accept going to.

+1

Also, why would Eric care about the return on the trade? It doesn't reflect his value to a team going forward. It only reflects what the Canes would get under very specific circumstances (i.e., an expiring contract, cap considerations, etc.).

That is the way it generally happens, but there's nothing that says that it has to work that way. If E12 says to RF, "Here's my list of 15 teams, and I also won't waive unless a current or former 1st rounder is coming back," then that's what RF has to work with. I seriously doubt it would go down that way, but it could.

Staal is going to be valuable to some team looking to make a serious playoff run. He's experienced, has size and reach and can play wing or center. He eats minutes and can scrum on the wall with the best of 'em. A team looking for scoring may not take him, but a team looking for size, face offs, experience and versatility will consider E12. Besides, you offer E12 the chance for another run and perhaps a deep run, he won't care what the return is. A lot of folks seem to think Eric Staal is not a good soldier and I'm of the opinion he is a character guy- not a chump, but a guy who gets it.

I think they waited too long to trade him. One down season can be explained away... three seasons of declining numbers? The return won't be what fans would think.

I would tend to agree, his trade value is certainly far past it's peak! But since we have your ear Habsy, your club could use him for a late playoff push...how about Staal for Michael McCarron and a 2nd rounder???
