Eric Staal Thread

I agree that Eric knows what Francis' number, and most importantly (at least to me) term, is by now. And I do believe Francis has not selected the "at no price and term" option, so therefore does have an offer on the table...including a trade and return, if Eric's interested.

What I was poking fun at was the possibility that there were no solid that's-a-deal trade offers in place.

So, "status quo"...#ForNow

I really hope the decision to trade Eric is made regardless of standings and playoff positioning. It is becoming more obvious every game that he is more of a passenger on this team. Statistically he is one of the worst first line centers in the league and is not even noticeable on the ice most nights.

I am wondering what his trade value ends up being but I think it heats up after this weekend.

I don't think player returns at deadline are going to be what they once were. GM's are white knuckling picks and prospects because of the cap not going up.

At this point I don't really care. We just need to be shed of Eric Staal and his contract ... and the stupid temptation to re-sign him so he can continue to under achieve. A 1st ... a decent young NHL forward ... whatever.

You'll get a first from a contender as that will amount to a high 20's pick. Teams on the bubble like Montreal or Jersey will want to hold onto their #1. The issue is cap space.

Personally, I don't see Eric moving unless he's dumped for whatever is offered. Same goes for other players rumored to be on the move. It's a weird year this year. The Canadian dollar tanking has adversely effected the revenue and cap and owners/GM's are acting squirrelly.

Statistically Rask has surpassed Staal this season. Who would have expected that? It's never been more apparent than now, that this team does NOT need Eric Staal, his salary and his lax attitude.

I recall a comment RF made a few months ago during an interview. He was talking about how he was a player on an expiring contract, yet there was no effort made to trade him by the deadline. His comment was to the effect it was not all that uncommon during his playing days to see a player not moved at the deadline and just let the contract expire. If I'm not mistaken, this is how he ended up getting the contract from the Hurricanes. I have often wondered if that's what will happen with E12 and that was a bit of foreshadowing. The contract just runs its course and he hits free agency...

You're correct. That's why Rask was centering and Staal was on the wing-- because Rask was outplaying him. Peters point blank said that. I think E12 had to earn his place back as a center.

Here's a theory. About a month or so ago E12 was playing much better than he is now. More energy. More drive. I don't know how that all coordinates with RF's meetings with E12's agent timewise. But it seems plausible that E12 was told that this team will be playing with more pace and if he can show that he can play to Peters' expectations then RF will make him a reasonable offer, and if he cannot then his time as a Hurricane will come to an end no later than July 1. E12 then failed the audition, was informed after the last meeting between RF and E12's agent that he was done here, and has reverted back to his lackluster self since then.

Like I said, just a theory and I'm not certain that it fits the timeline, but it seemed worth throwing out there on a Sunday afternoon.

First from a contender would be fine. That would give us three first round picks ... ours, the Kings' and another presumably lower pick. That gives all sorts of flexibility to make some deals and/or just draft well and carry on with the youth movement. I'd be satisfied with that.

Considering our depth at Defense, having three first round forward prospects injected into the system sounds nice. Or at least two and a top goalie prospect.

Yup ... and you could package to of those picks for a good veteran player or to move up to take a target. There's really a ton you could do with three firsts.

Luke DeCock weighs in with his opinion on what Ronnie should do:

Basically ignore the standings, trade Eric and Cam and try to trade Liles and Versteeg for assets AND consider the fact that subtracting those guys night not actually kill the Canes playoff push (all of which I agree with). He also added Jordan Staal and Skinner to the conversation (2 guys I wouldn't trade at this point unless the return is substantial) along with Ryan Murphy (who I think we all agree now has zero chance of finding a spot on the NHL team here).

Good summary CMal from Luke's article and I'm on board with most of it! Of course everything comes down to how the trade market heats up and develops in the next 13 days, but it's safe to say that Ronnie is now listening to all reasonable offers on Eric, Cam, Liles and Versteeg. Eric and Cam would both have to approve any trade out but I'm sure those obstacles have already been discussed.

I still do not see an obvious fit for Eric with any one team right now...no one really stands out as a good trading partner, but if a couple of teams were to make a big move early it may spur some contenders to follow suit with a big trade themselves.

Cam has played well enough this season to deserve a look or two from a playoff bound team looking to add a veteran keeper for cheap.

Liles has had his best season in years and should bring back a second or third round pick.

Versteeg is a guy I would rather hold on to and offer an extension, but he certainly has value on the trade front.

I do not see Jordan or Skinner being moved.

Great to see the article. I agree with most of it, but do question the value of trading Jordan Staal and/or Skinner. I am not sure what the expected return would be that would put the Canes in a better long term situation than just keeping them. My gut tells me the Canes would lose that trade and it would just add another couple years to the rebuild. Makes no sense on a hockey level unless they just have to dump salary and if that is the case the franchise might as well pack up and move now.

The rest of them...trade away Ronnie!!

I think when Luke mentions JStaal and Mr. Skin, it is only to emphasize that all options should remain open. Personally, I don't see them leaving, but if some schlub GM wants to over pay, feel free to knock us over with an offer.
